Altro giro, altra corsa. Questo volume l’ho letto da un po’ e sono assolutamente curiosa di saperne di più sulla vostra opinione. E’ una graphic novel che volevo leggere da un bel po’ e mi trovo a dovervela consigliare ovviamente. Ecco a voi:

RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio con Morgan, una quindicenne che non vede l’ora di fuggire dall’isola sulla quale si trova costretta a vivere e su sente stretta. Vuole finire la scuola e fuggire dalla sua mamma divorziata e triste e del suo fratellino o peggio ancora dal suo gruppo di amici che sono completamente differenti da lei e che non capiscono affatto Morgan, anzi sembrano quasi fingere di essere sue amiche e sembrano non capirla mai davvero. Lei ha tanti segreti, uno dei quali è baciare una ragazza. Quando si ritrova in pericolo e sta rischiando di annegare in mare a salvarle la vita ci pensa Keltie, misteriosa e apparentemente dai comportamenti molto strani seppur sia di una dolcezza disarmante. Ma anche Keltie ha dei segreti e la vita sull’isola non sembrerà più così soffocante.

Cosa succederà nella vita delle due giovani ragazze? Quale sarà il segreto di Keltie? Cosa potrà mai rischiare di allontanarla da Morgan e da tutto ciò che sta imparando? Quali consapevolezze raggiungeranno le due?

La trama è sicuramente onesta e rispecchia in tutto e per tutto ciò che andrà a trattare la storia. Anche perché finisce per mantenersi generica ed è molto bello che ci siano delle cose che scopriremo successivamente e non subito, dei segreti che sono nascosti e che si riveleranno pagina dopo pagina rendendo la lettura ancor più magica ed entusiasmante oltre che emozionante. Una trama che rivela il giusto e che ho trovato assolutamente calibrata.

La copertina è davvero ben fatta e bella esteticamente. E’ stata la cosa che mi ha coinvolto di più, è impattante e trovo che nell’illustrazione di ciò che sono i personaggi stessi, le due protagoniste vengano rese decisamente bene. Vediamo in alto Morgan che guarda verso l’acqua, verso il basso e scorge Keltie, la dolcissima e tenera Keltie che adorerete per i suoi occhioni e il suo entusiasmo prorompente. Il titolo è assolutamente rappresentativo della storia che andremo a leggere ed è proprio lì che si cela uno dei maggiori segreti del volume. Non vi resterà che scoprire di cosa si tratta, io l’ho adorato. Spero che se mai arrivi in Italia, questo libro venga mantenuto nella copertina almeno perché è davvero bella e che possa avere un titolo degno, magari semplicemente tradotto o se suona proprio male, magari

L’ambientazione è una piccola isola in mezzo al mare mentre l’epoca sembra essere recente anche se non è specificato in maniera del tutto esatta. In ogni caso la storia ha tematiche attuali quindi mi trovo a collocarla in un periodo contemporaneo e moderno.

I personaggi di questa storia non sono poi molti. Le nostre due protagoniste saranno Morgan e Keltie che si fanno portatrici della storia narrata e ci mostreranno tra cielo e terra e attorno a loro avremo modo di scoprire le amiche di Morgan e la sua stessa famiglia che faranno in qualche modo da sfondo a ciò che accade alle due protagoniste seppur siano loro al centro di tutto. Vi parlo delle due protagoniste del volume, che è sicuramente di loro che vorreste sentir parlare:

Morgan è una ragazza insicura e fragile e vorrebbe sentirsi libera di esprimersi come vorrebbe, specialmente davanti alle sue amiche ma non lo fa perché è quasi sicura che loro non possano comprenderla pienamente. In casa si sente soffocata dai genitori e da suo fratello che ne combina di tutti i colori e a volte le sembra letteralmente di soffocare sotto la pressione di tutto. Nonostante questo e per questo, Morgan è un personaggio in cui tutti possiamo rispecchiarsi viste le sue difficoltà ad esprimersi nel modo giusto oltre a non riuscire ad esprimere liberamente  la propria sessualità e fare coming out con le persone a lei vicine.

Keltie è l’esatto opposto di Morgan ed esprime liberamente ciò che è, ha un’aria esuberante e leggera e si lascia coinvolgere da ogni cosa particolare e bella che vede o che può piacerle. E’ entusiasta del mondo che la circonda e non si lascia abbattere dalle difficoltà, anzi si getta a capofitto per cercare di risolverli. Quello che nessuno sa ma che ben presto anche Morgan scoprirà è il suo profondo segreto, che viene dal mare e che spingerà entrambe ad esporsi per cercare di trovare una soluzione a tutto ciò che accade attorno a loro per via di questo segreto. E’ un personaggio tenero, che non si può non amare e apprezzare per la sua esuberanza e vitalità oltre ai suoi bellissimi occhioni luccicanti.

Il perno centrale si aggira tutto attorno alla protagonista del volume che, cercando un cambiamento nella propria vita nel pensiero della fuga dalla sua vita sull’isola, finisce davvero per cambiare drasticamente tutto ciò in cui crede. E quello che si ritrova a vivere sembra essere molto più bello ma condito da segreti che potrebbero rivelarsi persino pericolosi, in qualche modo.

Lo stile e la grafica utilizzati sono davvero dolci e ben costruite. Le illustrazioni sono la cosa migliore di tutto il volume sia per i colori utilizzati sia per lo stile con cui sono state delineate le figure e le cose che avvengono all’interno del volume. Per l’insieme della struttura grafica mi ha ricordato molto le Witch, lo stile di Elisabetta Gnone e i colori forti e decisi, sicuramente determinanti a livello visivo.

Le tematiche affrontate all’interno del volume sono differenti fra loro e non passano inosservate, anzi ci pongono il volume e la storia sotto diversi aspetti che sono da affrontare e rendono il tutto ancor più interessante, oltre che coinvolgente – a prescindere poi da quello che è la trama generale, ovviamente.

L’evasione come via di fuga dalla realtà scomode e dal non affrontare i problemi. Questo è quello che bene o male accade molto spesso ai ragazzi e alle persone fin dai tempi ma come ora e questo pone si, una via di fuga facile ma non risolve per la maggior parte delle volte il problema. E’ quello che inizialmente tenta Morgan, laddove si sente stretta si sente di voler fuggire dall’isola e di andare oltre, di cambiare aria e di trovare ciò che spera altrove ed è ancor più importante quando tutto questo si ribalta, dando la possibilità di scoprire che affrontare le cose è meglio che scappare via da tutto.

Le Selkie e la loro figura mitologica non solo ci mostrano una vecchia cultura appartenente all’Irlanda e all’Islanda in cui queste creature sono delle foche e vivono nel mare e a loro piacimento possono rimuovere il manto per diventare umane, ma ci regalano un qualcosa che all’interno del libro dona particolarità e originalità che a volte si perde. Questa lo fa nel modo giusto e ci ricorda in questo modo anche l’importanza del mare e delle sue creature marine e la loro bellezza.

Il lato LGBTQ+ e la voglia di emergere, di cercare di sentirsi accolta per ciò che si è che dovrebbe essere assolutamente normale ma che finisce per essere ancora un tabù e uno sconvolgimento per le persone. Morgan vorrebbe sentirsi libera avanti alle sue amiche di fare coming out e di poter mostrare il suo amore per Keltie oltre a ciò che è veramente. Questo è un punto molto importante e assolutamente apprezzato all’interno dello sviluppo della trama.

Il finale leggermente aperto lascia dei punti in sospeso ma non possiamo che sperare che arrivi presto un secondo volume che torni a parlarci delle due ragazze, perché no. Anche se non accadesse ad ogni modo sono soddisfatta della piega che ha preso la lettura.

Questo volume è una graphic novel delicata, leggera e che si lascia leggere pagina dopo pagina permettendoci di vivere con i piedi a terra ma con i ricordi d’estate e con un occhio al mare. E’ una lettura che mi trovo a dover consigliare, seppur sia ancora in inglese quindi per chi lo legge non può lasciarsela sfuggire e per chi vuole tentare, è una buona base di partenza, perché no. Speriamo poi venga anche tradotta in Italia magari.

Molly Knox Ostertag ci illustra e dispiega una storia delicata e che si lascia amare sia per le tematiche affrontate, sia per gli animali, il fatto delle mutaforma e l’amore che porta a prendere consapevolezza di se stessi e a dare forza per proseguire nelle scelte e nella vita. Una storia di due ragazze semplici che finiranno per avere un legame indissolubile.

Il mio voto per questo libro: 5 balene.

The story begins with Morgan, a fifteen-year-old who can’t wait to escape from the island on which she is forced to live and feels close to her. She wants to finish school and escape from her divorced and sad mother and her little brother or worse still from her group of friends who are completely different from her and who don’t understand Morgan at all, in fact they almost seem to pretend to be her friends and never seem to understand her really. She has many secrets, one of which is kissing a girl. When she finds herself in danger and is in danger of drowning in the sea, Keltie takes care of saving her life, mysterious and apparently with very strange behaviors of hers even though she is of a disarming sweetness. But Keltie also has secrets and life on the island will no longer seem so suffocating.

What will happen in the life of the two young girls? What is Keltie’s secret? What will ever risk to distance her from Morgan and from all that she is learning? What awareness will the two reach?

The plot is certainly honest and reflects in all respects what the story will deal with. Also because it ends up remaining generic and it’s very nice that there are things that we will discover later and not immediately, secrets that are hidden and that will be revealed page after page making the reading even more magical and exciting as well as exciting. A plot that reveals the right and that I found absolutely calibrated.

The cover is really well done and aesthetically beautiful. It was the thing that involved me the most, it has an impact and I find that in illustrating what the characters themselves are, the two protagonists are rendered very well. We see above Morgan who looks towards the water, downwards and sees Keltie, the very sweet and tender Keltie who you will adore for her big eyes and her irrepressible enthusiasm. The title is absolutely representative of the story we are going to read and it is precisely there that one of the greatest secrets of the volume is hidden. You will just have to find out what it is, I loved it. I hope that if it ever arrives in Italy, this book will be kept on the cover at least because it’s really beautiful and that it can have a worthy title, perhaps simply translated or if it sounds really bad, maybe

The setting is a small island in the middle of the sea while the era seems to be recent even if it is not specified in a completely exact way. In any case, the story has current themes so I find myself placing it in a contemporary and modern period.

There aren’t many characters in this story. Our two protagonists will be Morgan and Keltie who will be the bearers of the story told and will show us between heaven and earth and around them we will be able to discover Morgan’s friends and her own family who will somehow be the background to what happens to the two protagonists even if they are at the center of everything. I’m telling you about the two protagonists of the volume, which is surely of them you would like to hear about:

Morgan is an insecure and fragile girl and she would like to feel free to express herself as she would like, especially in front of her friends but she doesn’t do it because she is almost sure that they cannot fully understand her. At home, she feels suffocated by her parents and by her brother who is up to all sorts of things and at times it seems to her that she is literally suffocating under the pressure of everything. Despite this and for this, Morgan is a character in which we can all reflect given her difficulties in expressing herself in the right way as well as not being able to freely express her sexuality and come out to people close to her.

Keltie is the exact opposite of Morgan and freely expresses what she is she, she has an exuberant and light-hearted air and gets involved in every particular and beautiful thing that she sees or that she may like. She is enthusiastic about the world around her and she does not let her difficulties get her down, on the contrary she throws herself headlong into trying to solve them. What no one knows but that Morgan too will soon discover is her deep secret, which comes from the sea and which will push both of them to expose themselves to try to find a solution to everything that happens around them because of this secret. He’s a tender character, who you can’t help but love and appreciate for his exuberance and vitality as well as his beautiful shiny eyes.

The central pivot revolves around the protagonist of the volume who, looking for a change in her life in the thought of her escape from her life on the island, she really ends up drastically changing everything she believes in. And what she finds herself living seems to be much more beautiful but seasoned with secrets that could even prove to be dangerous, in some way.

The style and graphics used are really sweet and well built. The illustrations are the best thing about the whole volume both for the colors used and for the style with which the figures and the things that happen inside the volume have been outlined. For the whole of the graphic structure it reminded me a lot of the Witches, the style of Elisabetta Gnone and the strong and decisive colors, certainly decisive on a visual level.

The issues addressed within the volume are different from each other and do not go unnoticed, on the contrary they place the volume and the story under different aspects that are to be addressed and make everything even more interesting, as well as engaging – regardless of what it’s the general plot, of course.

Escapism as an escape from uncomfortable realities and not facing problems. This is what for better or worse happens very often to kids and people since the times but like now and this poses an easy escape route but most of the time it doesn’t solve the problem. This is what initially tempts Morgan, where she feels cramped she feels like she wants to escape from the island and go beyond, to change the scene and find what she hopes for elsewhere and it is even more important when all this is reversed, giving the possibility of discovering that facing things is better than running away from it all.

The Selkies and their mythological figure not only show us an old culture belonging to Ireland and Iceland in which these creatures are seals and live in the sea and at their pleasure they can remove their coat to become human, but they give us something inside the book it gives particularity and originality that is sometimes lost. This one does it right and in this way also reminds us of the importance of the sea and its marine creatures and their beauty.

The LGBTQ+ side and the desire to emerge, to try to feel welcomed for what one is that should be absolutely normal but still ends up being a taboo and an upheaval for people. Morgan would like to feel free in front of her friends to come out and to be able to show her love for Keltie beyond who she really is. This is a very important and absolutely appreciated point within the development of the plot.

The slightly open ending leaves some loose ends but we can only hope that a second volume will soon come back to tell us about the two girls, why not. Even if it doesn’t happen, in any case, I’m satisfied with the turn the reading has taken.

This volume is a delicate, light graphic novel that can be read page after page, allowing us to live with our feet on the ground but with summer memories and with an eye to the sea. It’s a reading that I find myself having to recommend, even if it’s still in English so for anyone who reads it can’t miss it and for anyone who wants to try, it’s a good starting point, why not. Let’s hope it will also be translated into Italy maybe.

Molly Knox Ostertag illustrates and unfolds a delicate story that lets us love both for the issues addressed and for the animals, the fact of shapeshifters and the love that leads to becoming aware of oneself and giving strength to continue in choices and in life. A story of two simple girls who will end up having an unbreakable bond.

La vita di Marjorie Glatt non è più stata la stessa da quando ha scoperto un gruppo di fantasmi nascosti nella lavanderia a gettoni della sua famiglia. Wendell, che morì giovane e ora deve vagare per la Terra come un fantasma con nient’altro che un lenzuolo per corpo, divenne presto uno degli unici amici di Marjorie. Ma quando alla fine Marjorie viene accettata dai ragazzi popolari a scuola, inizia a preoccuparsi che se qualcuno viene a conoscenza dei suoi amici fantasmi segreti, verrà etichettata come un mostro che vede persone morte. Delicates racconta una storia potente su cosa significa adattarsi e su quelli che rimangono all’esterno. Mostra cosa vuol dire sentirsi invisibili e l’importanza di sentirsi visti. È soprattutto una storia di chiedere aiuto quando tutto sembra buio e portare aiuto e luce a coloro che ne hanno più bisogno.

RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio qualche periodo dopo gli eventi di Sheets. Marjorie ha una comitiva di amici molto popolari adesso e finalmente oltre al lavoro alla lavanderia riesce ad avere una vita sociale, riesce non solo a vedere dei fantasmi ma qualcuno di reale che la considera e la porta con se agli eventi e alle feste più gettonate. E’ per questo che Marjorie ha paura che i suoi amici scoprino dei fantasmi e che possano abbandonarla per le sue stranezze incomprese. Wendell, d’altro canto, è il solito fantasma burlone che vorrebbe sempre giocare e divertirsi con la sua amica ma, per la prima volta comincia a sentirsi più solo di quel che è, comincia a sentirsi come Eliza, arrivata a scuola da poco e che cerca nelle sue fotografie di catturare fantasmi perché è proprio così che si sente: invisibile e un fantasma che cammina. E’ nei pressi della zona dove Wendell e Marjorie che le due si incontrano per la prima volta e si scontreranno nel corso della storia.

Cosa vuole Wendell da Marjorie? Riuscirà la ragazza della lavanderia a rendersi conto di quanto sia sbagliato per lei il suo nuovo gruppo di amici? Riuscirà ad avere la forza che le serve per maturare, cambiare ed essere se stessa veramente?

La trama di questa storia è molto lunga e ci mostra anche più di quello che dovrebbe, mi sarei limitata a raccontare meno lasciando curiosità al lettore; magari la cosa migliore sarebbe stata quella di mettere meno dettagli e inserire invece le ultime frasi che spingono curiosità riguardo cosa tratta la storia in questo secondo volume.

La copertina di questo secondo volume riprende la linea del primo volume sui colori e sui tratti della storia ma stavolta in primo piano troviamo l’obiettivo di Eliza, una ragazza che crede ai fantasmi e non vede l’ora di trovarne uno da fotografare. Infatti al centro dell’obiettivo c’è Wendell che non potrebbe essere un fantasma più reale ed esplosivo. Trovo la copertina giusta e in linea con ciò che accadrà all’interno del libro e che non vi rivelerò ovviamente. Il titolo è molto semplice e come per il volume precedente si compone di un’unica parola che racchiude tutto: Delicati, ovvero uno dei tipi di lavaggi che vengono fatti in lavatrice ed è proprio quello su cui questa storia si fonda. Stavolta la storia è delicata, con tematiche ancora più importanti di quelle del legame umano e fantasma e della solitudine. Qui c’è molto molto di più.

L’ambientazione e l’epoca sono le stesse del volume precedente: una piccola cittadina non definita anche perchè di questa vedremo ben poco: la casa e lavanderia dove vive e lavora Marjorie e la scuola che quest’ultima frequenta, in una storia fine anni 90, una ventina di anni fa probabilmente per abbigliamenti e via discorrendo.

I personaggi di questa storia sono i medesimi del volume precedente, con qualche aggiunta sinceramente degna di nota. In questo volume ho trovato la ragazza del volume precedente più spenta nonostante abbia degli amici e di quanto fosse più felice sola con Wendell e i suoi amici fantasmi.

Marjorie sta diventando grande e lascia sempre più da parte la lavanderia. Sente le responsabilità da adolescente, sente le responsabilità verso il suo fratellino anche se il padre cerca di allontanarla dal lavoro per farle vivere la sua adolescenza nel migliore dei modi possibili. Nonostante ora abbia degli amici popolari nella scuola, Marjorie non sembra essere così felice ed è  perennemente in disaccordo con ciò che fanno e dicono i suoi compagni nonostante non glielo dica apertamente e si tenga tutto dentro, mantenendosi distante e distaccata. La cosa che più infastidisce è il fatto che non agisca e non tira fuori ciò che invece vorrebbe dire e si nasconde dietro la paura dei fantasmi e di come sarebbe giudicata senza pensare che già quello che fanno lei lo trova tremendamente sbagliato anche se continua a stare accanto a quelle persone.

Wendell è un fantasma di un ragazzino morto e non sembra essere cambiato molto dal primo volume se non per il fatto che vorrebbe continuare a fare i giochi e le cose che faceva prima non rendendosi conto di quanto la sua amica Marjorie sta cambiando e crescendo ed essere un fantasma non è così facile nel mondo umano. Comincia quindi a sentire un velo di solitudine che lo rende ancor più infantile nella speranza di attirare l’attenzione su di lui non solo della sua vecchia amica ma del lettore stesso.

 Eliza è una ragazza che ha un professore nella sua stessa scuola e che ama tantissimo la fotografia. Più di ogni cosa nelle sue fotografie vorrebbe catturare dei fantasmi e spera di poterne finalmente vedere uno davvero. Perchè i fantasmi? Perchè Eliza si sente sola, emarginata e completamente invisibile, come se camminasse fra le strade, nella scuola e ovunque lei andasse e nessuno potesse vederla davvero. Eliza è un personaggio che potrebbe essere ognuno di noi e in cui tutti possono rispecchiarsi e a cui mi sono sentita particolarmente legata.

Il perno centrale di questa storia è molto diversa dal volume precedente. Questa storia ci mostra l’importanza di essere visti almeno una volta, e il lato invisibile che buona parte di noi può aver vissuto almeno una volta nella vita. Un racconto e una graphic novel potente su quelli che rimangono fuori dal coro, degli emarginati, la storia di qualcuno che vorrebbe ardentemente essere visto.

Lo stile utilizzato è molto semplice e l’autrice si riconferma davvero strabiliante, meravigliosa e semplice sia per quanto riguarda le tavole e la grafica dai colori leggeri, dai toni pastello che sembrano sul cromato rosso sia per quanto riguarda questa storia che colpisce ogni punto che vuole colpire.

Ho apprezzato tantissimo la tematica dell’essere invisibile e del sentirsi emarginato, il personaggio di Eliza alla ricerca del fantasma da fotografare nella speranza di sentirsi meno sola e apprezzata da qualcuno come lei. Eppure le sue foto sono dei semplici paesaggi e l’unica che sembra avere con se dei veri fantasmi è Marjorie che ora se ne sta con degli amici che non apprezzano molto la sua compagnia e viceversa. In effetti Marjorie sembra stare con loro solo per il semplice fatto di essere in e popolari e di sentirsi per una volta parte di un gruppo, non perchè li ritiene davvero degli amici allontanando come tutti Eliza seppur dandole uno spiraglio.

Non ho apprezzato molto questo cambiamento di Marjorie e il cambio di posizione. Anche lei ha sofferto le stesse cose, anche lei si sentiva sola e poco amata, specialmente dopo il dolore famigliare e tutto ciò che le è successo. Mi ha stupito che in alcune occasioni non abbia fatto nulla per Eliza, che non sia intervenuta nelle prese in giro dei suoi amici verso altre persone e che non abbia cercato o quantomeno provato a far capire che stavano sbagliando. Si è limitata al semplice silenzio. Posso capire questa posizione, che è la stesa che molti giovani di oggi assumono pur di far parte di un gruppo e si lasciano trascinare dagli altri ma è sinonimo di poca personalità e di non essere veramente qualcosa di forte. Questo l’ho trovato avvilente per il suo personaggio, un cambio strano e particolare che in alcuni punti me l’ha fatta persino odiare; avrei voluto dirle “Sveglia e guardati attorno!”. Mi sono sentita molto affine al personaggio di Eliza che prende piede pagina dopo pagina e fa il suo esordio portando al centro di tutto l’emarginazione e la solitudine, tema attuale e potente che ho apprezzato tantissimo.

La cosa triste è che Wendell diventa una specie di soprammobile, un ripiego che l’autrice sembra aver messo in mezzo per via dei fantasmi che Eliza voleva fotografare ma non gli ha dato un vero ruolo fondamentale se non quello metaforico della tematica stessa. Infatti anche Wendell cerca di farsi notare così come Eliza.

Il libro è di una potenza strabiliante e lo apprezzerete persino di più del primo volume sentendovi almeno come uno dei personaggi di questa storia. Non potete non rispecchiarvi in uno di loro. La storia è sicuramente da leggere, seppur in inglese e spero che arrivi presto anche in Italia visto che il primo volume è stato tradotto. Consiglio assolutamente, soprattutto ai giovani lettori.

Brenna Thummler si conferma ancor di più, oltre che illustratrice, una vera e propria narratrice di una storia interessante, da tematiche moderne. Una storia di amicizia, di accettazione e della rinascita, dell’emarginazione e del sentirsi invisibili in mezzo a tanta gente. Una storia reale, semplice e genuina che fa riflettere.

Il mio voto per questo libro è di: 4 balene e mezzo.

The story begins sometime after the events of Sheets. Marjorie has a group of very popular friends now and finally in addition to working at the laundry she manages to have a social life, she not only manages to see ghosts but someone real who considers her and takes her with them to the most popular events and parties. This is why Marjorie is afraid that her friends will discover ghosts and that they may abandon her for her misunderstood weirdness. Wendell, on the other hand, is the usual prankster ghost who always wants to play and have fun with her friend but, for the first time, he begins to feel more alone than he is, he begins to feel like Eliza, recently arrived at school and who tries to capture ghosts in his photographs because that’s exactly how he feels: invisible and a walking ghost. It is near the area where Wendell and Marjorie that the two meet for the first time and will clash over the course of the story.

What does Wendell want from Marjorie? Will the laundry girl realize how wrong her new group of friends is for her? Will she be able to have the strength she needs to mature, change and truly be herself?

The plot of this story is very long and shows us even more than it should, I would have limited myself to telling less, leaving the reader curious; maybe the best thing would have been to put fewer details and instead insert the last sentences that prompt curiosity about what the story is about in this second volume.

The cover of this second volume takes up the line of the first volume on the colors and traits of the story but this time in the foreground we find the lens of Eliza, a girl who believes in ghosts and can’t wait to find one to photograph. In fact, at the center of the lens is Wendell who couldn’t be a more real and explosive ghost. I find the right cover and in line with what will happen inside the book and which I will not reveal to you obviously. The title is very simple and as for the previous volume it consists of a single word that encompasses everything: Delicates, which is one of the types of washes that are done in the washing machine and that is precisely what this story is based on. This time the story is delicate, with themes even more important than those of the human and ghost bond and loneliness. There is much much more here.

The setting and the time are the same as in the previous volume: a small town not defined also because we will see very little of it: the house and laundry where Marjorie lives and works and the school she attends, in a story at the end of the years 90, about twenty years ago probably for clothing and so on.

The characters in this story are the same as in the previous volume, with some genuinely noteworthy additions. In this volume I found the dullest girl from the previous volume despite having friends and how happier she was alone with Wendell and her ghost friends.

Marjorie is growing up and is leaving the laundry more and more aside. She feels the responsibilities as a teenager, she feels the responsibilities towards her little brother even if her father tries to take her away from work to make her live her adolescence in the best possible way. Although she now has popular friends in the school, Marjorie doesn’t seem to be that happy and is perpetually at odds with what her classmates do and say despite not telling her openly and keeping it all inside, keeping aloof and detached. The thing that bothers the most is the fact that she does not act and does not bring out what instead she would like to say and hides behind the fear of ghosts and how she would be judged without thinking that already what they do she finds it terribly wrong even if she continues to stay. next to those people.

Wendell is a ghost of a dead kid and he doesn’t seem to have changed much since the first volume except for the fact that he would like to keep doing the games and things he did before not realizing how much his friend Marjorie is changing and growing and being. a ghost is not that easy in the human world. He then begins to feel a veil of loneliness that makes him even more childish in the hope of drawing attention to him not just from his old friend but from the reader himself.

Eliza is a girl who has a teacher in her own school and who loves photography very much. More than anything in his photographs he would like to capture ghosts and hopes to finally be able to see one for real. Why ghosts? Because Eliza feels alone, marginalized and completely invisible, as if she were walking in the streets, in the school and everywhere she went and no one could really see her. Eliza is a character who could be each of us and in which everyone can reflect and to which I felt particularly attached.

The central pivot of this story is very different from the previous volume. This story shows us the importance of being seen at least once, and the invisible side that most of us may have experienced at least once in our life. A powerful tale and graphic novel about those who stay out of the crowd, the marginalized, the story of someone who longs to be seen.

The style used is very simple and the author reconfirms herself as truly amazing, wonderful and simple both in terms of the tables and graphics in light colors, with pastel tones that appear on the red chrome and in terms of this story that affects every point that wants to hit.

I really appreciated the theme of being invisible and feeling marginalized, the character of Eliza in search of the ghost to photograph in the hope of feeling less alone and appreciated by someone like her. Yet her photos are simple landscapes and the only one who seems to have real ghosts with her is Marjorie who is now with friends who do not appreciate her company very much and vice versa. In fact, Marjorie seems to be with them only for the simple fact of being in and popular and for once feeling part of a group, not because she really considers them friends, distancing Eliza like everyone else, albeit giving her a glimmer.

I didn’t really appreciate this change of Marjorie and the change of position. She also suffered the same things, she too felt lonely and unloved, especially after the family pain and all that happened to her. I was amazed that on some occasions she did nothing for Eliza, that she did not intervene in the teasing of her friends towards other people and that she did not try or at least try to make them understand that they were wrong. It limited itself to mere silence. I can understand this position, which is the same that many young people today take in order to be part of a group and let themselves be carried away by others but it is synonymous with little personality and not really being something strong. I found this disheartening for her character, a strange and peculiar change that in some places even made me hate her; I wanted to say “Wake up and look around!”. I felt very close to the character of Eliza who takes hold page after page and makes her debut bringing to the center of all marginalization and loneliness, a current and powerful theme that I appreciated very much.

The sad thing is that Wendell becomes a kind of ornament, a makeshift that the author seems to have put in the middle because of the ghosts that Eliza wanted to photograph but did not give him a real fundamental role other than the metaphorical one of the theme itself. In fact, even Wendell tries to get noticed as well as Eliza.

The book is of astonishing power and you will appreciate it even more than the first volume by feeling at least like one of the characters in this story. You cannot fail to reflect yourself in one of them. The story is definitely worth reading, albeit in English and I hope it will soon arrive in Italy as the first volume has been translated. I absolutely recommend, especially to young readers.

Brenna Thummler is even more confirmed, as well as an illustrator, a real narrator of an interesting story, with modern themes. A story of friendship, acceptance and rebirth, marginalization and feeling invisible in the midst of so many people. A real, simple and genuine story that makes you think.

My rating for this book is: 4 stars and a half .

BUON POMERIGGIO CARE PARTICELLE LETTRICI!

Finalmente riesco a parlarvi di questo libro. So che è tanto che attendete un mio responso su questo volume e da tanto che è anche segnato come in lettura. Tra una cosa e l’altra è stato sempre rimandato ma è giusto anche che io ponga fine alla lettura di questo volume anche per l’autore che mi attende da mezzo secolo xD Spero potrai perdonarmi Peter e ti ringrazio per la pazienza nei miei confronti oltre ad avermi permesso di leggere il tuo volume. Ho acquistato il secondo volume così da leggerlo successivamente e ve ne parlerò, spero entro la fine dell’anno visto che quest’anno voglio utilizzarlo per recuperare diverse cose arretrate. RECENSIONE

La storia di questo primo volume della serie ha inizio in un giorno nefasto, un giorno che per tre persone, i protagonisti, cambierà improvvisamente ogni cosa. Silrith, discendente legittima e figlia di Re Lissoll di Bennvika, viene dichiarata colpevole di aver avvelenato suo padre per prendere il trono, proprio quando suo cugino Jostan è ritornato da pochi giorni. E’ Afanya, la sua personale ancella ad incolparla per cercare di scaglionare se stessa dall’essere accusata di aver avvelenato il piatto del Re su sua richiesta. Dall’altra parte c’è Erzina, una ribelle che cerca a tutti i costi la sua ribalta e quella del suo popolo oppresso per tanti anni, il popolo Hentai. E c’è Zethun, un nobile che fa parte della congrega dei Demokroi e cerca di mettere sempre avanti i diritti del popolo, cercando di sfidare la monarchia, spodestando i nobili dalle terre che hanno deturpato e rubato alla povera gente che voleva solo mangiare. Tre personaggi unici e diversi fra loro ma con degli ideali forti e che si faranno sentire.

Cosa succederà a Silrith una volta resa colpevole? Come riuscirà a farsi ascoltare Zethun? Come farà Erzina per tentare di far riemergere un popolo da sempre denigrato e ripudiato?

«E’ troppo rischioso». «Che razza di uomo sei? E’ il nostro paese quello di cui stiamo parlando». Stava diventando sempre più agitata. «Sai, sembra strano che tu fossi contento di insegnarmi a combattere, mentre ora sei così riluttante nel farlo per davvero.»  «Non posso prendere le armi contro il Re». «Pensavo fossi più forte di così.» replicò lei esasperata , dandogli di nuovo la schiena.

La trama di questa storia è ben scritta e molto, molto semplice se non addirittura introduttiva. Non dice molto di ciò che accadrà all’interno del volume ma ci preannuncia tre diversi personaggi che saranno i cardini di questa storia. Trovo interessante la scelta, sicuramente voluta, di non dire troppo al lettore che, incuriosito, si ritroverà a scoprire questo mondo e questa storia immergendosi completamente.

La copertina è originale e particolare e l’illustrazione riprende in maniera del tutto assoluta sia la copertina originale, sia la storia stessa. Possiamo vedere le spalle della giovane Silrith, a capo di ribelli, di coloro che la sostengono e di tanti eretici di altre terre, così come tante altre popolazioni che sperano in lei, nella libertà e in un mondo migliore. A capo di tutto questo un personaggio forte e autoritario che cerca di riprendere ciò che le è stato portato via. Il titolo è la mera traduzione dell’originale e apprezzo il fatto che sia stato mantenuto, così come per quanto riguarda la copertina. E’ un titolo originale, unico e mai utilizzato ne mai sentito quindi gioca a favore dell’autore in primis oltre che alla storia stessa che si ritrova con un titolo del tutto naturale, semplice e genuino oltre che distintivo. 

L’ambientazione di partenza è il regno diBennvika ma che si muoverà tra diversi territori, arrivando a Rildayorda e molti altri luoghi da scoprire; l’epoca sembra essere medioevale anche se non è specificata ne è specificato una data o un era particolare per lo sviluppo di questa storia.

«Mia Regina, non sarà vostro zio Lord Yathrud a guidare l’esercito?» Silrith arrestò il passo e lo aggredì verbalmente. «Io guiderò le mie truppe. Ovviamente, utilizzerò l’esperienza e l’assistenza di mio zio a mio vantaggio, ma come posso aspettarmi che le mie truppe combattano e muoiano per la mia causa, se io non lo faccio? Pensate che sarei una condottiera migliore se mi nascondessi nei miei alloggi come una bambina spaventata, invece di prendere il controllo del mio stesso destino? È questo il tipo di sovrano che preferireste servire?»

I personaggi di questa storia sono davvero tantissimi e parlarvi di ognuno di loro ci vorrebbe davvero tantissimo tempo per cui mi limiterò a parlarvi generalmente dei personaggi ricorrenti e di cui si parlerà maggiormente all’interno del volume. 

Silrith è una ragazza, un’erede al trono che si ritrova improvvisamente sola e accusata di omicidio del suo stesso padre seppur sia innocente. Da subito si dimostra una donna con molto carattere, forte e indipendente e che non si lascia scomporre troppo, ne segue tantissimo i protocolli reali ma che ama il suo popolo e il suo regno. L’amore per lei infatti è anche ricambiato e nessuno ha problemi a seguirla adocchi chiusi visto che lei è la prima a schierarsi in prima linea.

Zethun vuole fare qualcosa per il popolo a cui stanno togliendo sempre di più e al quale non sta rimanendo niente. Sente che l’essere Demokroi deve pur servire a qualcosa e il solo fatto di poter proporre delle cose al re, ascoltando il volere delle persone depredate delle loro terre è molto forte e da tenere in considerazione. E’ un uomo valoroso che si batte per i diritti ma che allo stesso tempo istiga la popolazione alla rivolta nonostante lui non ne prenda mai parte. Un personaggio piuttosto enigmatico.

Erzina, nonostante sia stata quella più vessata è il personaggio che è riuscita a coinvolgermi meno. E’ devota ad una divinità e crede che ritrovando un ciondolo perduto, potrebbe riacquisire la fortuna da tenpo perduta per il suo popolo Hentani che da anni è stato messo all’angolo e deriso. E’ una donna che non si tira indietro, forte e determinata pronta a tutto pur di riuscire nel suo intento. Fredda e calcolatrice, non si fa scrupolo di chi non ne ha avuto con lei.

«Un soldato fa ciò che gli viene ordinato» rispose lui, cercando di ignorare i suoi movimenti ma senza riuscire a controllare la reazione delle sue parti basse, ed era sicuro che lei l’aveva notato. «Ma avrete pure libero arbitrio?» domandò lei in tono cospiratorio. «Non c’è qualcosa che volete?» In quel momento, inconsciamente, Gasbron guardò verso Silrith, che stava chiaramente passando una bella serata ridendo, flirtando e ballando con Shappa. Ezrina se ne accorse. «Ah, capisco» disse maliziosamente. Gasbron mantenne un freddo silenzio e smise di muoversi, svelando il suo disagio. «Non posso biasimarvi» continuò in tono seducente Ezrina. «È squisita, vero? Davvero incantevole.»

Il perno centrale di questa storia, almeno fino a una prima parte del volume non sembra essere ben comprensibile. Forse la quantità di personaggi, di nomi e territori aiuta a confondere il lettore un pochino, tutti e tre i personaggi sono alla ricerca di qualcosa, seppur non sia la stessa. Ognuno a modo suo cerca di conquistare qualcosa per se stesso e per le persone che li circondano. Forse il perno centrale è questo o forse questo è solo l’inizio di una storia ancor più grande che si svilupperà molto di più nel secondo e nel terzo volume. Staremo a vedere…

Lo stile dell’autore è molto articolato, severo e giusto per quanto riguarda un buon fantasy. Da apprezzare anche l’elenco dei personaggi all’inizio che aiuta ne corso della lettura e che se non ci fosse stato avrebbe causato serie problematiche di lettura. La struttura della storia è molto buona anche se diverse volte mi sono domandata dove volesse andare a parare tutto questo, non solo a livello di riprendere ciò che sembra essere andato perso ma a livello ancor più grande e di storia generale; cosa che anche nella trama non è chiara. Ovviamente nel corso della storia si delineano dei punti comuni fra i vari personaggi e spero di saperne molto di più nel secondo volume, che spero mi dia soddisfazioni. Vi dirò qui di seguito le cose che hanno creato maggior problemi all’interno della lettura:

Troppi personaggi. Premetto che io adoro molto i fantasy con diversi punti di vista diversi che si ricongiungono in un determinato momento e, con questa storia, almeno agli inizi sembrava aver tutte le carte in regola per essere l’ideale. Solo che i personaggi sono diventati troppi. Troppi nomi di personaggi, troppi territori, troppi intrighi e troppi sotterfugi che confondono ancor più il lettore che cerca di raccapezzarsi in ciò che sta leggendo. Io posso ben comprendere la smania di voler raccontare e delineare una storia chiara e il più trasparente possibile ma raccontare TUTTO TUTTO è davvero impossibile. E’ sembrato, per l’appunto, che l’autore volesse raccontare quanto più della storia, quanti più dettagli possibili spiegando e spiegando tantissime cose – per carità – utilissime per la storia e una buona costruzione del tutto. Ad un certo punto però sono sembrati eccessivi, troppo tutto. Avrei preferito si dicesse meno, si limitasse ai tre personaggi principali limitandosi a riunire i loro punti di vista in qualcosa che li unisse tutti alla fine. Invece non mi ha convinto come speravo potesse fare questa storia.

Troppa autorità, troppe scene di guerra e pochi ma veri e reali sentimenti. Mi spiego. Quello che più di tutti mi ha sorpreso è stato il carattere di Silrith che, nonostante sia stato il personaggio che ho seguito con maggiore interesse, è stata fredda, calcolatrice troppo avvezza a sentimenti, così come capita anche negli altri personaggi dell’autore. Non fraintendetemi, si percepisce l’amore per il popolo, la forza e il carisma, il carattere o la rabbia e la vendetta di altri personaggi ma allo stesso tempo è l’autore stesso che non sembra comunicarli con passione e non li mostra reali ed effettivi. Insomma, ai personaggi manca del sentimento. Perchè per Silrith non vi è mai stato un momento che parlasse del legame con suo padre e del fatto che si senta devastato di averlo perso? Perchè mentre combatte non pensa al suo passato, ai suoi ideali e a suo padre (immagino magari) che le ha lasciato tutto questo e le ha insegnato anche molto altro. Perchè non si racconti del perchè Jostan sembra volere a tutti i costi quel regno e sia così avvezzo a voler uccidere, alla morte, alla vendetta e a tutto questo? Perché Erzina non racconta delle cose sul suo passato, eventi che possono averla traumatizzata o cose che possono essere accadute al suo popolo invece di meri racconti che trapelano quasi come leggende popolari? Non so, mi sarei aspettata molto più di questo.

Il world building, invece, è stata la cosa migliore del volume. Oltre ad aver trovato e immaginato territori sconosciuti, il mondo sembra essere chiaro e le descrizioni realistiche e ben improntate. Infatti, sia il regno di Bennvika che tutti i territori circostanti e le popolazioni con culture, armi e vesti diverse, colpiscono e rendono chiara la visione dell’insieme e delle strade, dei boschi e dei castelli che ci troveremo a vivere e dell’avventura nella quale ci stiamo immergendo. Di sicuro questo è che un punto a favore molto importante.

Insomma, tanta lotta, sangue, potere e intrighi politici che legano e intrecciano tantissimi personaggi fra loro e che non sembrano volersi disfare tanto facilmente. Un regno da riconquistare, delle terre da riassegnare ai loro legittimi proprietari, una donna emarginata e pronta a riprendere in mano ciò che le è stato tolto e ciò che ha subito per anni. C’è tanto di questo e la storia è ben scritta, colpisce e fa il suo lavoro solo speravo in qualcosa con un pizzico in più. 

Vi sono molti che credono che staremmo meglio senza nessun Re, a prescindere da chi ha o meno ucciso per raggiungere la sua posizione. Presto tutti sapranno che la Principessa Silrith è viva. Le persone comuni sono stanche di rischiare la loro vita per Re e Lord che non valutano il loro sacrificio. Necessitiamo di un monarca che possa mantenere la pace, altrimenti non se ne fa nulla.»

Il libro è stato sicuramente un buon punto di partenza ma mi aspetto molto molto altro dai prossimi volumi. Un primo volume con combattimenti feroci, intrighi e politica che per un lettore che ama questo genere di letture unite ad un pizzico di storicità, può essere una lettura giusta ed equilibrata anche se sono curiosa dei prossimi volumi e di vedere cosa succederà.

P. J. Berman ci lascia una storia di forza e di amore per il popolo, per le radici e per l’onore. Un primo volume che apre un varco verso un castello, tra uomini che lottano per il potere e la verità e l’uguaglianza. Siete pronti ad armarvi e a scendere in battaglia per difendere ciò in cui credete? E voi, da che parte vi schiererete?

Il mio voto per questo libro è di: 3 balene e mezzo.

The story of this first volume of the series begins on a disastrous day, a day that for three people, the protagonists, will suddenly change everything. Silrith, a legitimate descendant and daughter of King Lissoll of Bennvika, is found guilty of poisoning her father to take the throne, just when her cousin Jostan returned a few days ago. It is Afanya, her personal maid who blames her for trying to stagger herself from being accused of poisoning the King’s plate at her request. On the other side there is Erzina, a rebel who seeks at all costs her limelight and that of her people oppressed for so many years, the Hentai people. And there is Zethun, a noble who is part of the Demokroi coven and always tries to put forth the rights of the people, trying to challenge the monarchy, ousting the nobles from the lands they have defaced and stolen from the poor people who just wanted to eat. Three unique and different characters but with strong ideals that will make themselves felt.

What will happen to Silrith once she is guilty? How will Zethun manage to make himself heard? How will Erzina try to re-emerge a people who have always been denigrated and repudiated?

The plot of this story is well written and very, very simple if not introductory. It does not say much about what will happen inside the volume but it foretells us three different characters who will be the cornerstones of this story. I find interesting the choice, certainly deliberate, not to say too much to the reader who, intrigued, will find himself discovering this world and this story by immersing himself completely.

The cover is original and particular and the illustration completely reproduces both the original cover and the story itself. We can see the shoulders of the young Silrith, leader of rebels, of those who support her and of many heretics from other lands, as well as many other peoples who hope in her, in freedom and in a better world. At the head of all this a strong and authoritarian character who tries to take back what was taken away from her. The title is a mere translation of the original and I appreciate the fact that it has been kept, as well as the cover. It is an original title, unique and never used or never heard so it plays in favor of the author in the first place as well as the story itself which is found with a completely natural, simple and genuine title as well as distinctive.

The starting setting is the kingdom of Bennvika but which will move between different territories, arriving in Rildayorda and many other places to discover; the epoch seems to be medieval even if it is not specified nor is a particular date or era specified for the development of this story.

The characters in this story are really many and talking to you about each of them would take a very long time so I will just generally talk to you about the recurring characters and which will be discussed more in the volume.

Silrith is a girl, an heir to the throne who suddenly finds herself alone and accused of murdering her own father even though he is innocent. She immediately proves to be a woman with a lot of character, strong and independent and who does not let herself be broken down too much, she follows the royal protocols a lot but who loves her people and her kingdom. In fact, love for her is also reciprocated and no one has problems following her with closed eyes as she is the first to take the front line.

Zethun wants to do something for the people from whom they are taking away more and more and from whom nothing is left. He feels that being Demokroi has to serve something and the mere fact of being able to propose things to the king, listening to the will of the people looted from their lands is very strong and to be taken into consideration. He is a brave man who fights for rights but at the same time instigates the population to revolt even though he never takes part in it. A rather enigmatic character.

Erzina, despite being the most vexed, is the character who managed to involve me least. She is devoted to a divinity and believes that by finding a lost pendant, she could regain her long-lost fortune for her Hentani people who have been cornered and mocked for years. She is a woman who does not hold back, strong and determined ready to do anything to succeed in her intent. Cold and calculating, she has no qualms about anyone who hasn’t had any with her.

The central pivot of this story, at least up to the first part of the volume, does not seem to be well understood. Perhaps the amount of characters, names and territories helps to confuse the reader a little, all three characters are looking for something, even if it is not the same. Each in his own way tries to conquer something for himself and for the people around them. Perhaps the central pivot is this or perhaps this is just the beginning of an even greater story that will develop much more in the second and third volumes. We’ll see…

The author’s style is very articulate, severe and right as far as good fantasy is concerned. Also to be appreciated is the list of characters at the beginning which helps in the course of reading and which if it had not been there would have caused serious reading problems. The structure of the story is very good even if several times I have wondered where all this was going to end, not only at the level of resuming what seems to have been lost but at an even greater level and of general history; something that even in the plot is not clear. Obviously in the course of the story some common points are outlined between the various characters and I hope to know a lot more in the second volume, which I hope will give me satisfaction. I will tell you below the things that have created the most problems in reading:

Too many characters. I really love fantasy with different points of view that come together at a given moment and, with this story, at least at the beginning it seemed to have all the credentials to be ideal. Only the characters have become too many. Too many names of characters, too many territories, too many intrigues and too many subterfuges that confuse even more the reader who tries to understand what he is reading. I can well understand the desire to tell and outline a clear and as transparent story as possible but to tell EVERYTHING EVERYTHING is really impossible. It seemed, in fact, that the author wanted to tell as much of the story, as many details as possible, explaining and explaining many things – for heaven’s sake – very useful for the story and a good construction of the whole. At one point, however, they seemed excessive, too much. I would have preferred to say less, to limit itself to the three main characters simply to bring their points of view together in something that united them all in the end. Instead he didn’t convince me as I hoped this story could do.

Too much authority, too many war scenes and few but true and real feelings. Let me explain.What surprised me most of all was the character of Silrith who, despite being the character I followed with the greatest interest, was cold, calculating too accustomed to feelings, as happens in the other characters of the author. Don’t get me wrong, you can perceive the love for the people, the strength and charisma, the character or the anger and revenge of other characters but at the same time it is the author himself who does not seem to communicate them with passion and does not show them real and actual. In short, the characters lack the feeling. Why has there never been a moment for Silrith that she talks about the bond with her father and the fact that she feels devastated that she has lost him? Because while she is fighting she does not think about her past, her ideals and her father (I guess maybe) who left her all this and taught her much more. Why don’t you tell why Jostan seems to want that kingdom at all costs and is so used to wanting to kill, to death, to revenge and all this? Why doesn’t Erzina tell things about her past, events that may have traumatized her or things that may have happened to her people instead of mere tales that leak almost like popular legends? I don’t know, I would have expected a lot more than that.

The World building, on the other hand, was the best thing about the volume. In addition to having found and imagined unknown territories, the world seems to be clear and the descriptions realistic and well imprinted. In fact, both the kingdom of Bennvika and all the surrounding territories and populations with different cultures, weapons and clothes, strike and make clear the vision of the whole and of the roads, woods and castles that we will find ourselves living and adventure in which we are immersing ourselves. For sure this is a very important plus.

In short, a lot of struggle, blood, power and political intrigues that bind and intertwine many characters with each other and who do not seem to want to unravel so easily. A kingdom to be reconquered, lands to be reassigned to their rightful owners, a marginalized woman ready to take back what has been taken from her and what she has suffered for years. There is so much of this and the story is well written, it hits and does its job just hoping for something with a little more.

The book was certainly a good starting point but I expect much, much more from the next volumes. A first volume with fierce fights, intrigues and politics that for a reader who loves this kind of reading combined with a pinch of historicity, can be a fair and balanced reading even if I’m curious about the next volumes and to see what will happen.

P. J. Berman leaves us a story of strength and love for the people, for roots and for honor. A first volume that opens a passage towards a castle, between men who fight for power and truth and equality. Are you ready to arm yourself and go into battle to defend what you believe in? And you, which side will you take?

My vote for this book: Three stars and an half.

RECENSIONE IN ANTEPRIMA // PREVIEW REVIEW (#465) – THE ADOPTION DI ZIDROU & MONIN.

BUON POMERIGGIO CARE PARTICELLE LETTRICI!

Oggi sono qui per parlarvi di una graphic novel che è riuscita ad emozionarmi, a toccare delle corde fantastiche e di cui ringrazio sia Netgalley che la Casa editrice Diamond Book per avermi permesso la lettura. E’ un piccolo gioiello che spero verrà portato in Italia. Merita tantissimo. A voi:

But when surprise twists complicate matters, true feelings blossom and Life takes on a whole new palette. A comic book filled with love in which we discover this old man gradually becoming a grandfather and allowing himself to be tamed by an absolutely adorable little girl.

Trama tradotta da me: Quando il figlio e la figlia di Gabriel, anziani, adottano una ragazza orfana dal Perù, Gabriel non sa cosa pensare di questa bambina straniera che non è del suo stesso sangue. Inoltre, era a malapena un padre per suo figlio… come pretenderà di essere un nonno? La storia è composta da momenti di condivisione tra il nonno e la nipote, nonché varie interazioni su questo dilemma con sua moglie, i suoi amici di una vita e suo figlio stesso. Ma quando colpi di scena a sorpresa complicano le cose, i veri sentimenti sbocciano e la vita assume una tavolozza completamente nuova. Un fumetto pieno di amore in cui si scopre questo vecchio gradualmente diventando un nonno, lasciandosi conquistare con una bambina assolutamente adorabile.

RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio in Arequipa, in Perù. Un terremoto di 8.4 in scala Richter ha devastato il paese e il signor Gabriel, un signore ultra settantenne,  lontano miglia e miglia da lì in un altro paese, guarda le notizie non immaginando che a breve conoscerà sua nipote adottiva, arrivata proprio da quella terra devastata. Il suo nome è Quinaia e questa dolce e piccola bimba non sembra andargli a genio, non apprezzando le scelte di suo figlio che si distanziano molto dalle sue. Nonostante quanto detto e sostenuto dall’anziano signore si avvicina molto alla piccola Quinaia riscoprendo valori che credeva perduti e cose che non credeva fossero possibili. Ma anche questo strano equilibrio verrà stravolto prima o poi.

Cosa succederà a Gabriel e alla piccola Quinaia? Di quali consapevolezze si farà carico l’anziano nonno? Cosa avremo modo di scoprire nel corso di questa dolcissima e bellissima lettura?

La trama è semplice e spiega velocemente ciò che ci troveremo di fronte. E’ semplice e intuitiva, così come dovrebbe essere per una graphic novel, ovvero non raccontare troppo per non evitare di dire troppo.

La copertina è qualcosa di sensazionale e unico nel suo genere. Mi ha chiamato a sé già solo guardandola. Racchiude molto più di quello che vuole dire e riassume un po’ buona parte di questo volume. E’ una copertina dolcissima, con un nonno che guarda la nipote adottiva con uno sguardo strano, quasi fosse una cosa misteriosa e incomprensibile. Il titolo, da un valore aggiunto alla copertina e rende l’idea di ciò che cerca di comunicare anche se la storia dice molto di più e le tematiche trattate si concentrano non solo sul fatto dell’adozione ma sull’essere nonno, sull’essere una persona e sul riscoprire parte di se stessi. Una connubio indistruttibile a mio parere.

L’ambientazione si divide in due parti e non posso dire quali perché spoilererei parte del volume. Posso dire che inizia a casa del nonno Gabriel e si concentra agli inizi nella città dove lui vive per poi spostarsi per via di vicissitudini legate alla storia; l’epoca è moderna, contemporaneo, ai giorni nostri.

I personaggi di questa storia sono diversi anche se quelli assolutamente centrali ed effettivi sono pochi e si contano effettivamente sulle dita di una mano. Trovo incredibile la leggerezza del personaggio di Quinaia ed il cambiamento che subisce colui che si ritrova come nonno acquisito. A fare da sfondo i figli di Gabriel e sua moglie che cerca di dissuaderlo dall’essere così distante da tutto, la comitiva dei Gee Gee, gli amici di Gabriel e l’uomo che andremo a scoprire nella seconda parte del volume.

Gabriel, infatti, è un nonno ormai in pensione e si presenta fin da subito come scorbutico, poco incline all’adozione di questa nipote, restio a veder suo figlio fare un lavoro diverso dal suo e di aver mandato perduta l’attività di famiglia, nella macelleria dove lui lavorava da 50 anni. E’ un uomo che riscopre se stesso all’interno di un legame particolare, davanti agli occhi di una bambina che sembra adorarlo nonostante lui cerca a tutti i costi di mantenerla a distanza. Un personaggio che si scopre pagina dopo pagina, cambiamento dopo cambiamento.

Il perno centrale di questo volume non è solo il semplice rapporto nonno – nipote ma anche il cambiamento che tutto questo apporta nell’uomo che si troverà ad affrontare determinate situazioni e determinati scalini che non credeva di avere davanti a sé. Una storia completa e particolare, assolutamente da scoprire.

Lo stile e la grafica proposte e utilizzate in questo volume sono uniche e meravigliose. Si nota il tocco di Zidrou dopo aver letto per Bao Un’estate fa, in cui il tratto distintivo è lo stesso, unico e inimitabile. Queste illutrazioni hanno il suo marchio e si vede a un miglio di distanza. Apprezzo molto il suo tratto, i suoi disegni e i colori utilizzati in questa storia che rendono giustizia alla storia che Monin sembra aver strutturato assieme al disegnatore Zidrou.

La storia sembra essere suddivisa in due parti. Infatti su Amazon (In Italia almeno) ho notato che ci sono due diversi volumi di questa storia raccolti in un unico volume per Netgalley. Sinceramente vi consiglio la lettura di entrambi anche perché altrimenti non saprete mai come andrà a finire. In questa versione non c’è uno stacco a livello grafico ma a livello di storia, non rappresentato e quindi non annunciato ma che si capisce prendendo piede con la storia, che ci spiega cosa succederà. La divisione è repentina ma la storia non perde il messaggio o la validità delle tematiche trattate mantenendosi sullo stessa storia ovviamente.

Le tematiche sono semplici ma allo stesso tempo decise e forti agli occhi del lettore. E’ un viaggio alla scoperta dell’essere nonno ma anche di diverse cose: di ciò che ha sempre valutato in maniera sbagliata, di ciò che non è stato abbastanza e di ciò che vuole essere adesso, fino alla fine dei suoi giorni. La rinascita e le scoperte di un uomo che si era chiuso in un mondo in cui difficilmente lasciava entrare qualcun altro. Ed è proprio l’arrivo della piccola Quinaia a smontare gli equilibri e a permettere al nonno Gabriel di cambiare. Ci saranno anche delle scoperte che mineranno questo rapporto ma tutto colpisce e piace per come viene trattato e sistemato a livello di storia e illustrazioni.

Il libro è unico e inimitabile, assolutamente tenera e da leggere. Consiglio a tutti gli amanti delle grapich novel – e di chi legge in inglese con la speranza che venga portato presto in Italia – di leggere questo volume. Consiglio, consiglio, consiglio.

Zidou e Monin scrivono e illustrano una storia di amore, scoperta e  redenzione. Una storia adorabile su tutti i fronti che ho apprezzato tantissimo. Aprite il cuore anche voi alla piccola Quinaia, vi conquisterà.

The plot is simple and quickly explains what we will face. It is simple and intuitive, as it should be for a graphic novel, that is, don’t tell too much so as not to avoid saying too much.

The cover is something sensational and one of a kind. He called me to him just by looking at her. It encompasses much more than it means and sums up a good part of this volume. It is a very sweet cover, with a grandfather who looks at his adoptive granddaughter with a strange look, as if it were a mysterious and incomprehensible thing. The title gives an added value to the cover and gives an idea of ​​what it tries to communicate even if the story says much more and the issues dealt with focus not only on the fact of adoption but on being a grandfather, on being a person and about rediscovering a part of themselves. An indestructible combination in my opinion.

The setting is divided into two parts and I can’t say which ones because I would spoil part of the volume. I can say that it starts at the home of grandfather Gabriel and initially focuses on the city where he lives and then moves on through vicissitudes linked to history; the era is modern, contemporary, to the present day.

The characters of this story are different even if those absolutely central and effective are few and can actually be counted on the fingers of one hand. I find it incredible the lightness of Quinaia’s character and the change that the one who finds himself as grandfather undergoes. In the background the children of Gabriel and his wife who tries to dissuade him from being so distant from everything, the group of Gee Gee, Gabriel’s friends and the man that we will discover in the second part of the volume.

Gabriel, in fact, is a grandfather now retired and immediately presents himself as grumpy, not inclined to adopt this granddaughter, reluctant to see his son do a different job from his and to have sent the family business lost, in the butcher shop where he had worked for 50 years. He is a man who rediscovers himself within a particular bond, in front of the eyes of a little girl who seems to adore him despite the fact that he tries at all costs to keep her at a distance. A character who is discovered page after page, change after change.

The central pivot of this volume is not only the simple grandfather-grandson relationship but also the change that all this brings to the man who will face certain situations and certain steps that he did not believe he had in front of him. A complete and particular story, absolutely to be discovered.

The style and graphics proposed and used in this volume are unique and wonderful. You notice the touch of Zidrou after reading for Bao A summer ago, where the distinctive trait is the same, unique and inimitable. These illutrations have his own brand and it shows from a mile away. I really appreciate his stroke, his drawings and the colors used in this story that do justice to the story that Monin seems to have structured together with the illustrator Zidrou.

The story appears to be divided into two parts. In fact on Amazon (In Italy at least) I noticed that there are two different volumes of this story collected in a single volume for Netgalley. I honestly recommend reading both of them also because otherwise you will never know how it will end. In this version there is no detachment on a graphic level but on a story level, not represented and therefore not announced but which can be understood by taking hold with the story, which explains what will happen. The division is sudden but the story does not lose the message or the validity of the issues dealt with, obviously keeping on the same story.

The themes are simple but at the same time decisive and strong in the eyes of the reader. It is a journey of discovery of being a grandfather but also of different things: of what he has always evaluated incorrectly, of what has not been enough and of what he wants to be now, until the end of his days. The rebirth and the discoveries of a man who had closed himself in a world where he hardly let anyone else enter. And it is precisely the arrival of little Quinaia to break the balance and allow grandfather Gabriel to change. There will also be discoveries that will undermine this relationship but everything is striking and pleasing for how it is treated and arranged at the level of story and illustrations.

The book is unique and inimitable, absolutely tender and worth reading. I advise all lovers of graphic novels to read this volume. Advice, advice, advice.

Zidou and Monin write and illustrate a story of love, discovery and redemption. A lovely story on all fronts that I really enjoyed. Open your heart to little Quinaia, she will win you over.

Un libro che ho letto in lingua per via di un evento che lo promuove e spero che – almeno per gli amanti della lettura anche in lingua – sia un volume in più da aggiungere alla lista. Trama tradotta da me: Odierebbe meno il suo terzo occhio se le desse davvero poteri speciali. Quando il suo segreto è minacciato, potrebbe essere l’unica che può salvare il regno. RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio in un piccolo paese di perifera. Kira Shine è una ragazzina che ama lo skyboard e per racimolare qualche soldo, suo padre sfrutta il suo misterioso e magico dono truffando le persone facendo credere che lei avrebbe curato i loro problemi; Ebbene si, Kira ha un terzo occhio, sulla fronte. Un vero e proprio occhio che si apre in momenti particolari come quando Kira ha paura o è particolarmente stressata. Quando un alto funzionario del regno chiede loro aiuto per la caduta di suo figlio dallo Skyboard a cui Kira aveva assistito, lei cerca di dissuaderlo, non sa come aiutarlo veramente. Quando misteriosamente riesce nell’intento l’uomo la ricatta e finisce per andare con loro nella metropoli, dove diventerà la guardiana di suo figlio, nascondendo il tutto spacciandosi per una lontana cugina. 

Per quale motivo Trace, il figlio del funzionario è in pericolo? Cosa sta succedendo in città? Quale mistero lega Kira a Trace e al giovane principe erede al trono che segue gli studi nella stessa scuola? Perchè il terzo occhio è tanto importante?

I walked inside. The stranger straightened, showing he was decently tall. Strength shone from his eyes. His gaze raked me from head to toe. “She is young.” My father shut the door. “She is very talented.” My hand fisted, my fingers digging into my palms. Then, the stranger moved back to reveal another person on my father’s dilapidated chair. There lay the boy from the mountain—pretty boy—the one I’d left to three healers. The bearded stranger put a hand on the boy’s head. “Do whatever it takes. Just help him.”

La trama è scritta molto bene, lascia molto all’immaginazione per quanto riguarda la storia complessiva e non ci lascia spoiler sul futuro. Tutto molto misterioso, questo sicuramente la cosa che riesce ad attirare di più. Cosa succederà alla ragazza con tre occhi?

La copertina la trovo davvero, davvero bella. Non so per quale motivo ma questa strana corona con l’occhio al centro m ha messo curiosità ancor prima di leggere la trama. E’ una copertina semplice, funzionale e che lascia affascinato il lettore che cerca di comprendere il legame che c’è fra quella corona, l’occhio, il sangue e il titolo di questo volume. Quest’ultimo infatti, a dominare la storia ed a lasciare l’impronta per chi cerca di capire qualcosa in più sul volume. Un titolo dritto al punto, focale e interessante.

L’ambientazione ha inizio a Kushmari il paese dove inizialmente viveva Kira, e si sposta nel cuore del Rajekstan, a  Raj City, dove è insediato il principe ed erede al trono e dove converge il fulcro del popolo. L’epoca sembra essere futuristica anche se ci troviamo in un posto molto similare all’India e di cui ritroveremo i colori, le spezie e la bellezza visiva.

Run, Kira. You’re a fraud. Whatever he thinks you can do, you know you can’t. But I couldn’t. I took steps back until the heels of my boots teetered at the top edge of the stairs. Guardsmen surrounded me like a noose. “What if I say no?”

I personaggi di questa storia sono molto interessanti e si amalgamano fra loro mano a mano che la lettura va avanti. Inoltre si riesce anche a percepire il cambiamento e la maturità dei diversi personaggi nello sviluppo di questo volume. Sia per quanto riguarda Kira e Trace, ma anche per se stessa, per il modo di porsi col principe e la corte e con Sir Lyon.

Kira Shine è un’amante dello skyboard. Non è brava, è un vero e proprio talento. Nonostante questo è impulsiva, testarda e riesce a stento a tenere a freno la lingua. E’ comunque una ragazza che porta con sé un fardello non indifferente: ha ereditato da sua madre un terzo occhio che sta sulla fronte e si apre nei momenti di particolare stress o di difficoltà. E’ un personaggio che riuscirete ad apprezzare nel corso della lettura.

My hands curled into fists. I said evenly, “I’m not trained to protect anyone. I don’t even know how to fight.” “However, you can see into any cruel heart.” His eyes locked onto mine. “You have an incredible gift, an invaluable one. I am not here by coincidence. Rumors and whispers led me to the great healer of Kushmari Village. Then, I diligently watched for weeks until I found your father. You are not exactly a healer. You are something even more powerful. I fully intend to hone your gift to my end.”

Il perno centrale di questa storia, nonostante si pensasse fosse il terzo occhio di Kira, almeno fino alla metà del volume sembra essere lo Skyboard. Successivamente, tutto si trasforma per far riprendere la scena centrale al terzo occhio e al suo mistero.

Lo stile è stato molto scorrevole e fluido, si legge in poco tempo e non si rimane delusi dalla scrittura anche se ho trovato delle stranezze piuttosto singolari, sopratutto come viene presentata l’età dei personaggi. Probabilmente è un modo di dire in lingua ma non essendoci abituata non riuscivo inizialmente a comprendere, utilizzando quasi il metodo francese. Quindi dicendo ad esempio “Seven and ten” per intenderci. Per il resto, per essere una lettura in lingua ho letto cose più complesse quindi è leggera veloce e pratica anche per chi è alle prime armi con l’inglese.

La storia ha al suo interno molto della cultura Hindù che affascina e cerca di carpirne ancor di più i suoi palazzi, la struttura e l’organizzazione anche se ho trovato la storia molto più focalizzata sulla scuola e sullo sport dello Skyboard rispetto al resto. Lo Skyboard sembra essere uno sport molto simile allo snowboard ma con dei particolari motori di cui non so dirvi. Su questo non è stato esattamente chiaro, comunque lo skyboard è si un punto di movimento e fa parte della storia ma non pensavo che riuscisse quasi completamente a dominarla. 

In poche parole? Troppo sport e poco fantasy. Dal titolo e dalla copertina mi sarei aspettata molta più enfasi, mistero fitto e intrighi legati al terzo occhio di Kira, ma per buona parte del volume si parla di questo come un dono e basta senza neanche spiegare a cosa serva questo dono tanto nascosto. Misteri su misteri che continuano a convergere sullo sport ma che perde d vista il punto focale della storia. Su questo infatti, la storia perde molto e sono rimasta delusa da ciò che ne deriva. Mi sarei aspettata molta più dinamicità, misteri e sangue.

Andando avanti con il volume si fa intrigante soprattutto il “cattivo” della situazione, l’antagonista che nonostante una parte risulti scontato, dall’altra parte c’è qualcosa che riuscirà a sorprendere il lettore lasciandolo senza parole.

I’m happy to finally meet you.” I would meet you anytime. I stood there gaping at his Royal Hotness, my body battered and sweaty. His woodsy scent surrounded me. As gingerly as if he held a live grenade, I placed a suddenly boneless hand in his. Lightning crackled. A shock of electricity from his fingertips zapped my skin.

Il libro è un inizio di serie abbastanza coinvolgente, sia nella storia che nelle dinamiche. Un ingresso nel mondo di un India fantasy che riesce a meravigliare. Spero nei prossimi volumi ci sia più fantasy e meno sport così da rendere la lettura più avvincente.

Priya Ardis è sicuramente un’autrice da tenere in considerazione. Scrive una storia che la lega alle sue credenze e rende l’India in cui ci troveremo, un regno magico e ricco di colori, misteri e particolarità.

Il mio voto per questo libro: 3 balene e mezzo.

The story begins in a small suburban town. Kira Shine is a little girl who loves skyboarding and to make some money, her father exploits her mysterious and magical gift by scamming people into believing that she would cure their problems; Yes, Kira has a third eye on her forehead. A real eye that opens in particular moments such as when Kira is afraid or is particularly stressed. When a high-ranking official of the kingdom asks them for help with her son falling off the Skyboard that Kira witnessed, she tries to dissuade him, she doesn’t know how to really help him. When he mysteriously succeeds in the man’s intent, he blackmails her and ends up going with them to the metropolis, where she will become the guardian of her son, hiding everything by pretending to be a distant cousin.

Why is Trace, the officer’s son in danger? What’s happening in the city? What mystery links Kira to Thrace and the young prince heir to the throne who is studying in the same school? Why is the third eye so important?

You will feel little in life. Somedays you will feel small. But it will pass. Be brave. Be strong. Be my sunshine. 

The plot is very well written, leaves a lot to the imagination in terms of the overall story and leaves no spoilers about the future. All very mysterious, this is certainly the thing that manages to attract the most. What will happen to the girl with three eyes?

I find the cover really, really beautiful. I don’t know why, but this strange crown with the eye in the center made me curious even before reading the plot. It is a simple, functional cover that fascinates the reader who tries to understand the link between that crown, the eye, the blood and the title of this volume. The latter in fact, to dominate the story and to leave an imprint for those seeking to understand something more about the volume. A title straight to the point, focal and interesting.

The setting begins in Kushmari, the country where Kira initially lived, and moves to the heart of Rajekstan, in Raj City, where the prince and heir to the throne is installed and where the fulcrum of the people converges. The era seems to be futuristic even if we are in a place very similar to India and of which we will find the colors, the spices and the visual beauty..

The characters in this story are very interesting and blend with each other as the reading progresses. Furthermore, it is also possible to perceive the change and maturity of the different characters in the development of this volume. Both as regards Kira and Trace, but also for herself, for the way of dealing with the prince and the court and with Sir Lyon.

Kira Shine is a skyboard lover. She is not good, she is a real talent. Despite this, she is impulsive, stubborn and can barely hold her tongue. However, she is a girl who carries a considerable burden with her: she inherited from her mother a third eye that is on the forehead and opens in moments of particular stress or difficulty. He is a character that you will be able to appreciate in the course of reading.

The central pivot of this story, although it was thought to be Kira’s third eye, at least up to half the volume seems to be the Skyboard. Subsequently, everything is transformed to make the central scene resume the third eye and its mystery

The style was very smooth and fluid, you read in a short time and you are not disappointed with the writing even if I found some rather unique oddities, especially how the age of the characters is presented. It is probably a way of saying in the language but since I was not used to it I could not initially understand, using almost the French method. So saying for example “Seven and ten” so to speak. For the rest, to be a language reading I have read more complex things so it is light, fast and practical even for those who are new to English.

The story has a lot of Hindu culture within it that fascinates and tries to capture even more its buildings, structure and organization even if I found the story much more focused on school and the sport of Skyboard than the rest. Skyboarding seems to be a very similar sport to snowboarding but with particular engines that I can’t tell you about. On this it was not exactly clear, however the skyboard is a point of movement and is part of the story but I did not think it could almost completely dominate it.

In short words? Too much sport and not much fantasy. From the title and the cover I would have expected much more emphasis, dense mystery and intrigues related to Kira’s third eye, but for a large part of the volume we talk about this as a gift and that’s it without even explaining what this hidden gift is for. Mysteries upon mysteries which continue to converge on sport but which lose sight of the focal point of the story. On this in fact, the story loses a lot and I was disappointed by what comes from it. I would have expected much more dynamism, mysteries and blood.

Going forward with the volume, especially the “bad” of the situation becomes intriguing, the antagonist who although one part is taken for granted, on the other hand there is something that will surprise the reader leaving him speechless.

The book is a fairly engaging series start, both in story and dynamics. An entrance into the world of a fantasy India that manages to amaze. I hope in the next volumes there is more fantasy and less sport to make the reading more compelling. I would like to recommend it as a first approach to English, certainly a good start to the saga that I hope will turn into much more.

Priya Ardis is definitely an author to be taken into consideration. She writes a story that binds her to her beliefs and makes the India in which we will find ourselves, a magical kingdom full of colors, mysteries and peculiarities.

My vote for this book is: 3 stars and an half.

Attualmente sto leggendo due volumini che spero di concludere per la fine della settimana. Uno è Good Luck Girls di Charlotte Nicole Davis, edito Rizzoli, che ho acquistato subito dopo la sua uscita e di cui ero molto curiosa. Spero sia molto bello. A voi lo spezzone:

A primo acchito la copertina mi ispira tantissimo e la lettura è super scorrevole quindi vi dirò quando si aggiungeranno dettagli maggiori. Intanto ve ne lascio un brevissimo estratto che vi traduco subito sotto.

Ecco qui che vi lascio la traduzione che spero sia abbastanza ben fatta. Non facendo la traduttrice faccio quello che posso, sappiatelo.

Entro all’interno. Lo sconosciuto si raddrizzò, mostrando abbastanza quando fosse alto. La forza brillava nei suoi occhi. Il suo sguardo mi percorse dalla testa ai piedi. “Lei è giovane.” Mio padre ha chiuso la porta. “Ha molto talento.” La mia mano si chiuse in un pugno, le mie dita affondarono nei miei palmi. Quindi, lo straniero tornò indietro per rivelare un’altra persona sulla sedia fatiscente di mio padre. Oggi sono qui per portarvi la recensione di un libro in inglese che spero possa piacervi, in special modo a chi si avvicina di tanto in tanto alle letture in lingua. Nonostante consiglio sempre di iniziare da una lettura più leggera tipo una graphic novel per quanto riguarda l’approccio con l’inglese, vi consiglio comunque la lettura di questo volume, leggera e molto semplice. Trama tradotta da me: È il 1987 e purtroppo non è tutto il balsamo per labbra Madonna e ciliegia. Mayhem Brayburn ha sempre saputo che c’era qualcosa di strano in lei e sua madre, Roxy. Forse ha a che fare con il costante dolore fisico di Roxy, o forse con l’irresistibile attrazione di Mayhem verso l’acqua. Ad ogni modo, sa che non sono come tutti gli altri. Ma quando finalmente il patrigno di May si spinge troppo oltre, Roxy e Mayhem fuggono a Santa Maria, in California, la città costiera che contiene le risposte a tutte le domande di Mayhem su chi sia sua madre, la sua famiglia estranea e i misteri di se stessa. RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio la sedicenne Mayhem Brayburn che, con sua madre Roxy, torna nella casa di famiglia nella cittadina balneare di Santa Maria. Entrambe fin da quando Mayhem era bambina hanno vissuto in Texas con il padrino della ragazza, Lyle, un tipo alcolizzato e violento. La goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso è stato quando anche Mayhem è stata colpita dall’uomo. La giovane ragazza non ricorda la sua vecchia casa, né sua zia anche se sa che suo padre è morto proprio lì, a Santa Maria. È in quel posto quasi magico che Mayhem si troverà di fronte a tante scelte, a consapevolezze e di fronte al fatto di ragazze che nel paese sembrano scomparire.

Cosa vuol dire essere una Brayburn nel suo paese d’origine? Cosa scoprirà lungo il suo percorso e dopo il suo trasferimento? Cosa cambierà nella vita di Mayhem?

Now, Roxy’s lying on the bed, watching the candlelight flicker across the ceiling, Millie on her chest. Roxy says obrigado. She says amor. Whatever ghosts she thought she was escaping all those years ago were here all along, just waiting for her to come back.

La trama è interessante e ci offre gli spunti per conoscere a pieno questa storia. Non ci sono spoiler ed è evidente che porta con sé una magia nascosta che si cela dietro le pagine di questo misterioso volume al femminile.

La copertina mi ha attirato fin dal primo istante in cui il. Volume mi è stato proposto. Rappresenta Mayhem sullo scoglio che scorge l’orizzonte lontano che l’attende riportando una vera e propria scena del volume. Il titolo è il nome della protagonista anche se a primo impatto avevo pensato significasse qualcosa in una lingua diversa o che fosse un qualcosa di particolare. Non avrei mai pensato ad un nome essendo abbastanza inusuale. Trovo il connubio titolo copertina molto intrigante e interessante.

Corre l’anno 1987, in un piccolo paese americano chiamato Santa Maria, un paese costiero in California.

“Did you love Lyle?” I ask. “I mean, do you?” Her pills make me uneasy, but they also open her up and peel her back. Sober, this question would produce a slammed door, a face hidden under hands, but now she looks over at me, already blurring at her edges with the promise of the relief to come. “I had my love. I only ever had one. Two, including you. Lyle wasn’t bad to start, and he could dance. And he protected me at first, so all I had to do was be there. He rescued me right out of the welfare office.”

I personaggi di questa storia sono diversi, tutti assolutamente particolari e misteriosi a partire dalla protagonista Mayhem.

La protagonista principale, Mayhem, è una ragazza forte, che nella vita ha subito tanto. Sa che sua madre è fragile e nonostante lo sia anche lei cerca di mascherare il tutto dando la forza che serve a lei più che a sé stessa. È una ragazza che vede oltre le cose e che ha una predilezione per l’acqua fin da bambina. È un personaggio misterioso, chiuso in cui mi sono rivista personalmente tanto avendonun carattere molto simile quando si affrontano le cose difficili. Finalmente qualcosa in cui posso rispecchiarmi.

Jason, Snow e Kidd sono i figli di Elle, sorella di Roxy e zia di Mayhem, portano una luce differente a questa storia lasciando ognuno una caratteristica forte che li contraddistingue.

Diary are sacred. They belong to their author. They are not to be touched by anyone else. I know what happens when you go poking around in other people’s things. People get hurts. They get slammed into walls. People get bruised.

Il perno centrale di questa storia è Mayhem che nonostante sia l’emblema stesso di questo volume, ci porta nel suo mondo vedendolo con i suoi occhi. Occhi che hanno sofferto ed hanno visto cose dolorose che nessuno dovrebbe mai vivere. Una storia sicuramente toccante da questo punto di vista, che ci avvicinano molto alla protagonista.

Lo stile utilizzato dall’autrice è semplice, scorrevole e piuttosto fluido quindi anche se in lingua originale si legge davvero in poco tempo.

In primo piano mi sento di dover fare delle affermazioni su questo libro. Per quanto si possa accostare ad un libro che riporta, come affermato, di essere femminista, io penso che sia soltanto un libro con protagoniste tutte al femminile. Cioè, non perché i personaggi che dominano in questa storia sono donne allora vuol dire che il romanzo sia femminista.

Inoltre, il sovrannaturale, anche questo come da slogan, è davvero sopravvalutato. C’è un riferimento a dei vampiri ma sono più che altro leggende dettate dalla cittadina che aleggiano nel mistero per quasi tutto il volume – anche se non l’ho creduto veritiero fin dal subito. C’è un aura strana nel paese ma sembra più un qualcosa che crede Mayhem che quanto ci sia davvero.

Per quanto riguarda l’epoca, non ci sono delle vere e proprie cose che lasciano pensare che ci troviamo in quel preciso anno o in quegli anni. Forse soltanto agli inizi il vestiario dei due ragazzi ma niente di più quindi l’anno sembra essere soltanto di mero contorno, niente di più,adattandosi quindi anche ai giorni d’oggi. Avrei sicuramente preferito che fosse più incisivo.

Nonostante questo, la lettura è sicuramente interessante e originale, molto diversa dal solito e, se devo essere sincera, ci voleva.

But we have stories, and our stories help us to understand each other. I write you today, knowing I am too cowardly to give you this story before my death, but I am comforted, knowing you will have it one day and then it will not be mine alone. It will be yours as well. It is already yours. I’m sorry I’m not brave enough to help you make sense of it. I wonder what’s inside you. (…) Everything in life comes with a price; every joy has a sorrow like a tail at its back. Every victory a trail of blood behind it. We keep getting up, child. As we must.

Il libro è stata sicuramente ben scritto, che mi ha intrigato a partire dalla trama appassionando ma, se cercate un libro con azione scordatevelo. Mayhem è molto riflessivo e si muove con calma, in punta di piedi. Consiglio la lettura.

Estelle Laure scrive una storia al femminile, ricca di mistero e di carattere. Una storia dura, emozionante e di grande impatto. Un libro da leggere.

The story begins with the sixteen year old Mayhem Brayburn who, with his mother Roxy, returns to the family home in the seaside town of Santa Maria. Both since Mayhem as a child have lived in Texas with the girl’s stepfather, Lyle, an alcoholic and violent man. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when Mayhem was also hit by the man. The young girl does not remember her old house, nor her aunt even though her father died right there, in Santa Maria. It is in that almost magical place that Mayhem will find himself faced with many choices, with awareness and with the fact of girls who seem to disappear in the country.

What does it mean to be a Brayburn in your home country? What will you discover along your way and after your transfer? What will change in Mayhem’s life?

The plot is interesting and offers us the cues to fully understand this story. There are no spoilers and it is evident that it brings with it a hidden magic that is hidden behind the pages of this mysterious female volume.

The cover attracted me from the first moment the. Volume was proposed to me. It represents Mayhem on the rock that sees the distant horizon that awaits it, reporting a real volume scene. The title is the name of the protagonist even if at first glance I thought it meant something in a different language or that it was something special. I would never have thought of a name being unusual enough. I find the union title cover very intriguing and interesting.

It runs the year 1987, in a small American country called Santa Maria, a coastal country in California.

The characters of this story are different, all absolutely particular and mysterious starting from the protagonist Mayhem.

The main protagonist, Mayhem, is a strong girl, who has suffered a lot in life. She knows that her mother is fragile and although she is, she tries to mask everything by giving the strength she needs more than herself. She is a girl who sees beyond things and who has a fondness for water since she was a child. He is a mysterious, closed character in which I personally saw myself so much having a very similar character when facing difficult things.

Finally something in which I can mirror myself. Jason, Snow and Kidd are the children of Elle, Roxy’s sister and Mayhem’s aunt, they bring a different light to this story, each leaving a strong characteristic that distinguishes them

The central pivot of this story is Mayhem which despite being the emblem of this volume, takes us into his world seeing it with his own eyes. Eyes that have suffered and have seen painful things that nobody should ever live. A story certainly touching from this point of view, which bring us very close to the protagonist.

The style used by the author is simple, fluent and rather fluid so even if in the original language it can be read very quickly.

In the foreground, I feel I have to make statements about this book. As much as you can approach a book that reports, as stated, that you are a feminist, I think it is only a book with all female protagonists. That is, not because the characters that dominate in this story are women then it means that the novel is feminist.

Furthermore, the supernatural, even this as per slogan, is really overrated. There is a reference to vampires but they are mostly legends dictated by the town that linger in mystery for almost the entire volume – even if I didn’t believe it truthfully from the beginning. There is a strange aura in the country but it looks more like Mayhem than it really is.

As for the time, there are no real things that suggest that we are in that specific year or in those years. Perhaps only at the beginning the clothing of the two boys but nothing more then the year seems to be only of mere outline, nothing more, thus adapting also to the present day. I would certainly have preferred it to be more incisive.

Despite this, the reading is certainly interesting and original, very different from the usual and, if I have to be honest, it took.

The book was certainly well written, which intrigued me starting from the plot with a passion but, if you are looking for a book with action, forget it. Mayhem is very thoughtful and moves calmly, on tiptoe. I recommend reading.

Estelle Laure writes a feminine story full of mystery and character. A hard, exciting and impactful story. A book to read.

Come state? Oggi sono qui per portarvi una recensione di un libro che sta per uscire in lingua inglese e che non vedevo l’ora di leggere visto che il precedente libro dell’autore è stato molto apprezzato dalla sottoscritta. Ringrazio Netgalley per avermi permesso la lettura e vi lascerò qui una recensione in italiano e in inglese ovviamente. A voi:

Trama tradotta da me: La sedicenne Emily è in fuga. Tra i suoi genitori e il problema che ha recentemente incontrato a scuola, ha sufficienti ragioni per volersene andare. Ma quando trova un bambino di nome Aidan che vaga nei boschi, sa che deve aiutarlo a trovare la strada di casa. Ma tornare a casa non è facile, soprattutto quando Emily scopre che Aidan non è nemmeno dalla Terra. Quando il loro aereo si schianta sul fianco di una montagna innevata, spetta a Emily assicurarsi che Aidan e il loro pilota, Bob, riescano a scappare dalla montagna. Inseguiti dalle forze governative che vogliono catturare Aidan, la squadra improbabile di tre escursionisti attraverso il paesaggio gelido, imparando di più l’uno sull’altro e sulla vita, di quanto abbiano mai creduto possibile.

RECENSIONE

La storia ha inizio con uno schianto. Emily, clandestina su un aereo da trasporto merci non immagina che l’aereo stia precipitando e che assieme a lei rischi la vita anche Aidan, quello che lei sostiene sia suo fratellino. Entrambi ne escono indenni e con loro anche il pilota Bob, che si unirà loro in questa avventura. Schiantati nel parco nazionale in Alaska, nel freddo della neve e delle temperature glaciali, si trovano tutti e tre a dover fuggire da degli uomini che li stanno cercando, degli uomini in nero. Aidan non è un essere umano ma un alieno ed è finito sulla terra per sbaglio ed Emily cercherà di proteggerlo per permettergli di tornare a casa.

Riuscirà l’adolescente Emily, nell’intento? Cosa scopriranno lungo il percorso? Il pilota cercherà di aiutarli? Quale posto dovranno raggiungere per permettere ad Aidan di tornare a casa?

“We can’t walk it?” “No,” she said. Silence again. “So we’re lost?”“Not yet,” she said. “Not yet. I’m going to get you home, I promise.”

Trama curiosa che da subito attira il lettore anche se promette molto, mettendo parecchie carte in tavola che, nel corso della storia invece, deludono. Quindi devo ammettere di non essere rimasta particolarmente colpita dalla trama riletta dopo aver letto il libro.

La copertina è assolutamente rappresentativa della storia, sia per il fatto della luna che per la vista del cielo nel bel mezzo degli alberi. Nonostante ci siano diverse versioni della copertina, trovo che questa sia quella che lo rappresenti al meglio e che, personalmente, mi piace di più. Il titolo è particolare, come essere in nessun luogo e allo stesso tempo dappertutto. Sicuramente ben pensato visto che Aidan è sulla terra ma non fa parte di essa, quindi apprezzato.

Ambientato nel Wrangell-St.Elias National Park, in Alaska, la nostra giovane protagonista cerca di raggiungere Anchorage per aiutare Aidan, e l’epoca sembra essere abbastanza moderno, una storia sicuramente contemporanea anche se non è specificato un vero e proprio anno in cui essa è ambientata.

“They’ll come,” he said. He didn’t sound too convinced. Alaska was a big place. “They’ll see the smoke, don’t worry.” She squinted up. The mountain was wreathed in fog. “Hmm,” she said. But that was exactly what she was worrying about—that they might come. Some people wanted to be lost, and she was one of them.

I personaggi di questa storia non sono tantissimi e sono piuttosto delineati seppur non mi abbiano convinto a pieno nella loro interezza.

Aidan, nonostante sia il personaggio chiave di questa storia, non è ciò che ti aspetti e non riesce ad arrivare effettivamente al lettore se non per cosa dice Emily. Ma ciò che dice la ragazza sembra contrastare un po’ rispetto a come lui stesso si presenta e non sono riuscita a trovare una vera e propria connessione con questo personaggio ne con il legame che viene a crearsi fra i due se non verso il finale.

Emily è una ragazza fragile, che si attacca ad Aidan quasi fosse un’ancora di salvezza e crea un legame famigliare che a lei è sempre venuto a mancare. Ha la forza e la tenacia degli insegnamenti di suo padre ma cerca di farsi accettare sia dalla famiglia che dagli amici. A scuola succede qualcosa che continua a segnarla e a cui lei pensa spesso. Un personaggio emblematico che guiderà questa storia lungo il percorso innevato delle montagne dell’Alaska.

“What do you mean?” she said. “You saw me as a I really am,” he said. “When you found me. So you’re the one who will remember me. When I’m gone.” She looked down at him, her little brother, whom she’d only just met, who would soon be gone. “And I will remember you,” he said. Silence, for a long moment. Then, Emily went over to Aidan, and very deliberately took his hand. “Look at them,” said Emily’s mom. Her face window-rained by tears, tracking on her pale skin. “They’ve always been a pair.”

Il perno centrale di questa storia è Aidan. Essendo di una razza aliena e potendo fare determinate cose oltre ad avere delle caratteristiche è entrato nel cuore di Emily e allo stesso tempo lui si sente legato a lei come ad una vera e propria componente familiare.

Lo stile utilizzato è molto diverso rispetto all’approccio che ha avuto in Luna 2, il volume precedente, pubblicato in Italia per Mondadori, all’estero chiamato Satellite. La struttura narrativa per quel volume era con punteggiatura non lineare, senza maiuscole e con uno stile sicuramente singolare. In questo volume passiamo in terza persona con una struttura assolutamente lineare.

Per quanto riguarda la storia, posso dire che non mi ha entusiasmato molto come invece avevo sperato, soprattutto per dei fattori determinanti. 

Emily è un personaggio che non riesce ad arrivare completamente, proprio come accade per Aidan. Per quanto riguarda Bob, lasciamo proprio stare. Emily crea un legame particolare con Aidan ma allo stesso tempo finisce anche per esserne gelosa riguardo ai suoi genitori anche se non è suo fratello. In più, tutte le sue abilità che le vengono propinate sembrano quasi essere forzate e poco inerenti al volume. Il padre le ha insegnato tante cose ma sembrano essere state inserite soltanto per essere utilizzate in questo contesto.

Il fatto dei genitori di Emily. La loro presenza – oltre al fatto di essere completamente ingiustificata e completamente fuorviante – non viene neanche spiegata ma minimizzata con il semplice fatto “eravamo preoccupati”. Why? Questa cosa mi ha lasciato completamente stordita.

Il fatto che Aidan abbia dei strani persuasivi che non vengono spiegati del tutto – neanche da lui – ma che allo stesso tempo non servono a nulla se non a dare il messaggio e la morale finale. Perchè non creare più azione, più momenti di contatto con chi vuole esaminarlo e poterlo rendere in qualche modo operativo e -SOPRATTUTTO – UTILE?

L’azione sembra esserci solo al momento che l’aereo precipita e mantiene la suspance che possa accadere qualcosa da un momento all’altro cosa che si trova a deludere il lettore perchè l’azione è pressocché inesistente per il 60% del volume. Il bello comincia quando si raggiunge la svolta finale e tutto acquista un senso, persino il legame fra Aidan ed Emily che dapprima sembra quasi minimo. Nel finale tutto sembra essere incredibilmente migliore del resto ed è riuscito anche ad emozionarmi.

Per quanto riguarda la storia nel suo complesso è un Ni, infatti anche nella votazione finale mi mantengo su una sufficienza più scarsa che altro. Una fuga rocambolesca, lenta, con avvenimenti più strani che altro che, secondo il mio parere, l’autore non è riuscito a gestire come voleva.

“I have looked in their heads as I have looked in yours. And, Emily, here is the thing. It is funny to me that you have so many stories about us invading. About us taking over the world. As if war was a universal language, as if it was the thing that makes all creatures the same.”She nodded. She couldn’t speak. Her voice would crack. Her voice would break. Her voice would fall, like their plane, and be in pieces, all over the world. “It seems strange to me,”Aidan continued. “Because the most universal language is love, isn’t it? It’s the thing we all understand. I look into your parents’heads, and it’s all I see. All I see is love. All I see is love, for you.”

Una storia che suona quasi come un retelling o una specie di rivisitazione molto alla lontana del famoso ET, che non è riuscita a colpirmi come invece speravo e, come è stato per il suo libro precedente. Consiglio esclusivamente agli amanti del genere, non a chi cerca una storia ricca di azione ma qualcosa di incentrato più sui sentimenti e sulle emozioni oltre al fatto della creatura extraterrestre.

Nick Lake mantiene la strada delle stelle, passando dal Satellite alla Terra invertendo le parti con il volume precedente. Laddove in Satellite si voleva scendere sulla Terra ora dalla Terra si cerca di tornare nello spazio. Una storia particolare, un viaggio unico.

Il mio voto per questo libro è di: 3 balene.

The story begins with a crash. Emily, clandestine on a freight plane, does not imagine that the plane is crashing and that with her, Aidan, who she claims to be her little brother, is also risking her life. Both come out unscathed and with them also the pilot Bob, who will join them in this adventure. Crashed in the national park in Alaska, in the cold of the snow and glacial temperatures, all three find themselves having to flee from men who are looking for them, men in black. Aidan is not a human being but an alien and ended up on earth by mistake and Emily will try to protect him to allow him to return home.

Will the teenager Emily be able to do it? What will they discover along the way? Will the pilot try to help them? What place will they have to reach to allow Aidan to go home?

Curious plot that immediately attracts the reader even if it promises a lot, putting several cards on the table that, throughout history, however, disappoint. So I have to admit that I wasn’t particularly impressed by the reread after reading the book.

The cover is absolutely representative of the story, both for the fact of the moon and for the view of the sky in the middle of the trees. Although there are several versions of the cover, I find that this is the one that best represents it and that, personally, I like best. The title is particular, like being nowhere and at the same time everywhere. Definitely well thought out since Aidan is on earth but not part of it, so appreciated.

Set in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, Alaska, our young protagonist tries to reach Anchorage to help Aidan, and the era seems to be quite modern, a definitely contemporary story even if a real year is not specified.

The characters in this story are not many and are rather outlined although they have not fully convinced me in their entirety.

Despite being the key character in this story, Aidan is not what you expect and can’t actually get to the reader except for what Emily says. But what the girl says seems to contrast a little with respect to how he presents himself and I was unable to find a real connection with this character nor with the bond that is created between the two if not towards the end.

Emily is a fragile girl, who sticks to Aidan as if she were a lifeline and creates a family bond that has always failed her. He has the strength and tenacity of his father’s teachings but tries to make himself accepted by both family and friends. At school something happens that continues to mark her and that she often thinks about. An emblematic character who will guide this story along the snowy path of the Alaska mountains.

The central pivot of this story is Aidan. Being of an alien race and being able to do certain things as well as having characteristics, he entered Emily’s heart and at the same time he feels tied to her as a real family member.

The style used is very different from the approach he had in Luna 2, the previous volume, published in Italy for Mondadori, abroad called Satellite. The narrative structure for that volume was with nonlinear punctuation, without capital letters and with a definitely singular style. In this volume we pass in the third person with an absolutely linear structure.

As for the story, I can say that I was not as enthusiastic as I had hoped, especially for the determining factors. Emily is a character who can’t quite get there, just like Aidan does. As for Bob, let’s just leave it alone.

Emily creates a special bond with Aidan but at the same time also ends up being jealous of her about her parents even if she is not her brother. In addition, all her skills that are offered to her seem almost to be forced and not very inherent in volume. Her father taught her many things but they seem to have been inserted only to be used in this context.

The fact of Emily’s parents. Their presence – besides being completely unjustified and completely misleading – is not even explained but minimized with the simple fact “we were worried”. Why? This thing left me completely stunned.

The fact that Aidan has strange persuasives that are not fully explained – not even by him – but that at the same time are useless if not to give the message and the final moral. Why not create more action, more moments of contact with those who want to examine it and be able to make it in some way operational and – ESPECIALLY – USEFUL?

The action seems to be there only when the plane crashes and maintains the suspense that something may happen at any moment which is to disappoint the reader because the action is almost non-existent for 60% of the volume. The beauty begins when the final turning point is reached and everything acquires a meaning, even the bond between Aidan and Emily which at first seems almost minimal. In the end, everything seems to be incredibly better than the rest and also managed to excite me.

As for the story as a whole is a Ni, in fact even in the final vote I keep on a sufficiency scarcer than anything else. A daring escape, slow, with stranger events than anything else that, in my opinion, the author was unable to manage as he wanted.

A story that sounds almost like a retelling or a kind of reinterpretation very far from the famous ET, which has failed to hit me as I hoped and, as it was for his previous book. I recommend only to lovers of the genre, not to those looking for an action-packed story but something more focused on feelings and emotions in addition to the fact of the extraterrestrial creature.

Nick Lake keeps the way of the stars, going from the Satellite to the Earth by reversing the parts with the previous volume. Where in Satellite one wanted to go down to Earth now from Earth one tries to return to space. A particular story, a unique journey.

My vote for this book is: 3 stars.

RECENSIONE // REVIEW #394 – BLOOD AND GREED V.1 DI P. J. BERMAN.

BUON POMERIGGIO CARE PARTICELLE LETTRICI!

Oggi sono qui per portarvi una raccolta di racconti in inglese uscita da poco per quest’autore. Ho anche un volume che avevo iniziato di quest’autore ma ancora devo finirlo essendo in inglese ed anche abbastanza corposo. Comunque conto di finirlo in qualche tempo perchè vorrei finirlo di leggere. Comunque, l’avevo acquistato in prevendita e finalmente è arrivato nel mio kindle direttamente e non ho esitato un momento a leggerlo. Ve ne parlo subito:

RECENSIONE

Le storie narrate sono quattro, ognuna ambientata in epoca diversa dall’altra ma che portano con loro quattro modi diversi di vivere la guerra, la vittoria, il sangue, la sconfitta e il dolore.

La guerra, il sangue e l’avidità legano questi racconti in maniera sublime e ci ricordano che siamo un popolo infinitamente stupido, quanto fragile, e queste guerre non portano a nulla se non alla distruzione e alla perdita.

Cosa succederà in questi quattro racconti? Cosa ci mostrerà l’autore di ogni realtà? Riuscirete a sentirvi parte di queste storie?

Theodosius blinked as he thought he saw the fleet leader adjust its course. It couldn’t be, could it? Yet he was sure he had seen the lead ship swing a little to the south, just a little. Yes, the ship was turning. It was turning away from the city. A roar exploded from the city walls as soldiers celebrated, watching as the first ship, then the second and third, then all behind them slowed and swung their bows towards the south, turning to sail away en masse. They’d done it. They’d lived, and because they’d lived, so did the people of Athens. No, this was not a victory over a vanquished enemy. But in times such as these, simply to survive was the greatest victory of all.

La trama è semplice e ovviamente non racconta quasi nulla, come è giusto che sia. Sono già dei racconti e cercare di spiegarli sarebbe davvero difficile.

La copertina è piuttosto particolare. I colori non mi colpiscono particolarmente e ne avrei utilizzati altri ma riporta ciò che le storie effettivamente raccontano e restano in tema con lo stile dell’autore rispetto ai libri precedenti. Il titolo è certamente adatto alle storie e alla trama preposte che sicuramente ritroveremo – almeno parte di esse – in un secondo volume che spero arriverà presto. Sangue e Avidità, la traduzione di questo titolo ci preannuncia cosa accomuna tutte queste storie di guerra, di avidità e sangue, di persone comuni in epoche diverse accomunate, quasi, dallo stesso destino.

L’ambientazione e l’epoca sono diverse a seconda dei racconti preposti. Passeremo dall’Antica Grecia alla Polonia nel corso di una delle guerre mondiali ai Romani per finire in Mesopotamia. Storie diverse, incredibili, che lasciano l’amaro in bocca ma che ci ricordano quanto l’umanità continui inesorabilmente a commettere i stessi errori semplicemente per la brama di un qualcosa che, la maggior parte delle volte, non riesce neanche ad ottenere.

I personaggi di questa storia sono diversi a seconda della storia che incontreremo.

Avremo modo di conoscere Theodosius in Eretria nella guerra contro Atene, un giovane che cerca vendetta dopo aver visto profanare e assassinare la propria sorella. Un uomo in Polonia che sta per attaccare il suolo nemico a bordo del suo velivolo P11 e che pensa spesso alla sua famiglia, di cui ha una foto attaccata proprio lì vicino a lui. O di Sigeric, Romano innamorato di quello che ha anche se va contro il suo stesso popolo. Per finire con un giovane schiavo in Mesopotamia che serve la famiglia reale ed è innamorato della giovane principessa ma che sta per perdere tutto dalle sue mani.

The others would never understand their connection. Not his family. Not the people of his village. But she wasn’t like most Romans. Licinia didn’t think herself better than the Visigoths, even though many of them believed themselves to be of higher standing than her, a Roman slave. If anyone found out, they would both be shunned; cast out at best, but the love they shared was something Sigeric would and could never sacrifice.

Il perno centrale di questi racconti viene lasciato proprio dal titolo stesso: “Sangue e Avidità”.  Ad accomunare tutti e quattro i racconti è proprio questo e, come vi ho già annunciato in precedenza, la stupidità umana di una bramosia ingiustificata. Dei racconti storici efficaci, ben costruiti.

Lo stile utilizzato dall’autore è articolato e particolarmente crudo ma allo stesso tempo ben strutturato e di facile lettura per essere comunque un libro in lingua inglese. Quindi, per chi volesse cominciare ad approcciare con la lingua inglese con un bel libro questo libro può essere quello che fa per voi.

I racconti sono ambientati tutti in epoche diverse e tutte permettono al lettore di immedesimarsi nel luogo in cui sono ambientate. Berman ha la facoltà di riuscire a trasportare il lettore in un viaggio nel tempo attraverso luoghi così diversi fra loro trasmettendone sia lo spirito che le singole peculiarità visive, gli odori, le cose che contraddistinguono le varie città, i costumi utilizzati. Leggere i libri di P.J. Berman sono quanto più vicino ad un viaggio nel tempo ben riuscito e, nonostante non sia una vera e propria amante del genere storico, l’autore riesce a trasmetterti passione per quei posti come riesce a trasmetterti i sentimenti dei suoi personaggi. Credo questa sia una vera peculiarità di pochi e quest’autore ci riesce davvero bene. Complimenti.

Sicuramente ho la mia storia preferita fra le quattro e posso dirvi che The Fate of Mari è quella che è riuscita a conquistarmi maggiormente anche se so che anche il pilota polacco mi darà soddisfazioni nel secondo volume, dove di certo lo ritroveremo. Nonostante The Fate of Mari sia il mio racconto preferito, a livello di cose che contraddistinguono i personaggi e ciò che fanno, non so se rispecchi troppo il periodo storico ma non oso comunque addentrarmi in questa specifica cosa perchè personalmente – storicamente parlando – non amo molto la storia e non posso parlare troppo per cose che ovviamente Peter, l’autore avrà studiato e si sarà documentato.

‘You’ve seen Princess Narramtum again, haven’t you? I’ve noticed that hangdog look. Whenever you see her, your face lights up and whenever you’re then sent somewhere else, you’ve got a face like Ereshkigal’s demons have taken up residence in your head. I know it sounds harsh, but you’re just going to have to get through this. You’ll never have her. You’re a commoner and she’s a princess, end of story. I know that sounds harsh, but I’m only saying it because I care about you.’ I knew the truth of it. She was my best friend. I should have treated her better. ‘It’s not just that, Tabni. It’s the way she looks at me, the way any girl looks at me — as staff. I want them to look at me and see a man. Somebody strong and brave. Somebody who oozes masculinity.’

Il libro è una piccola perla di carattere storico che vi consiglio di non perdere, specialmente se siete amanti di storie a sfondo storico, con battaglie dure ma con personaggi e caratteristiche molto più umane di quanto sembri. Un libro che mi sento vivamente di consigliare.

P. J. Berman  ci porta in varie epoche al centro di battaglie e guerre difficili, dure e pericolose, consentendoci di conoscere e di apprezzare ogni singolo protagonista di queste storie. Una lettura davvero interessante.

RECENSIONE IN INGLESE // ENGLISH REVIEW

There are four stories narrated, each set in a different era from the other but which bring with them four different ways of experiencing war, victory, blood, defeat and pain.
War, blood and greed bind these stories in a sublime way and remind us that we are an infinitely stupid, yet fragile, people, and these wars lead to nothing but destruction and loss.

What will happen in these four stories? What will the author of each reality show us? Can you feel part of these stories?

The plot is simple and obviously it tells almost nothing, as it should be. They are already stories and trying to explain would be really difficult.

The cover is quite particular. The colors do not particularly strike me and they could be the others but they indicate what the stories tell and remain in theme with the author’s style compared to previous books. The title is certainly suitable for all the stories and the intended plot that we will surely find – at least part of them – in a second volume that I hope will arrive soon. Blood and Greed, the translation of this title tells us what all these stories of war, of greed and blood, of ordinary people in different periods have in common, almost united by the same destiny.

The setting and the age are different according to the stories told. We will pass from Ancient Greece to Poland during a world war on the Romans to end up in Mesopotamia. Different, incredible stories, which leave a bad taste in the mouth but which remind us of how humanity continues inexorably to make the same mistakes simply because of the craving for something that, most of the time, it can’t even get.

The characters in this story are different depending on the story we will meet.

We will get to know Theodosius in Eretria in the war against Athens, a young man who seeks revenge after seeing his sister desecrated and murdered. A man in Poland who is about to attack enemy soil aboard his P11 aircraft and who often thinks of his family, of which he has a photo attached right next to him. Or Sigeric, Romanic in love with what he has even if it goes against his own people. To end with a young slave in Mesopotamia who serves the royal family and is in love with the young princess but who is about to lose everything from his hands.

The central pivot of these stories is left by the title itself: “Blood and Greed”. What all four stories have in common is precisely this and, as I have previously announced, the human stupidity of unjustified longing. Effective, well-constructed historical accounts.

The style used by the author is articulated and particularly raw but at the same time well structured and easy to read to be a book in English anyway. So, for those who want to start approaching the English language with a good book, this book can be the one for you.

The stories are all set in different eras and all allow the reader to identify with the place in which they are set. Berman has the faculty of being able to transport the reader on a journey through time through places so different from each other by transmitting both the spirit and the individual visual peculiarities, the smells, the things that distinguish the various cities, the costumes used. Read the books of P.J. Berman are as close to a successful journey through time and, despite not being a real lover of the historical genre, the author manages to convey passion for those places as he manages to convey the feelings of his characters. I think this is a real peculiarity of a few and this author does it really well. Compliments.

Surely I have my favorite story among the four and I can tell you that The Fate of Mari is the one that managed to conquer me most even though I know that the Polish pilot will also give me satisfaction in the second volume, where we will certainly find him again. Although The Fate of Mari is my favorite story, at the level of things that distinguish the characters and what they do, I don’t know if it reflects the historical period too much but I don’t dare go into this specific thing anyway because personally – historically speaking – I don’t love much the story and I can’t speak too much for things that of course Peter, the author will have studied and documented himself.

The book is a small pearl of a historical nature that I advise you not to miss, especially if you are a lover of stories with a historical background, with hard battles but with characters and characteristics much more human than they seem. A book that I highly recommend.

P. J. Berman takes us in various eras to the center of difficult, hard and dangerous battles and wars, allowing us to know and appreciate every single protagonist of these stories. A really interesting reading.

My vote for this book is: 4 stars.
