Asha è una ammazza-draghi. La storia ha inizio con una storia proibita. Asha la racconta in gran segreto per attirare ed ingannare un drago per poi ucciderlo.
Da bambina, la madre di Asha le raccontava delle storie proibite per fare in modo che la piccola non avesse più incubi ed il solo raccontargliele l’ha uccisa. Quando Asha, da bambina provò a riprodurre quelle vecchie storie proibite attirò un drago sulla città che la distrusse dandola alle fiamme. Asha da quell’evento ne rimase sfregiata sul volto oltre che profondamente segnata visto che tutti la additano come la Iskari, ovvero il portatore di morte. Uno degli antichi e profondi racconti dice che un tempo c’era il Namsara, figlio del cielo e dello spirito che portava con se una scia di amore e divertimento ovunque andasse. Ma nel momento in cui c’era luce per controbilanciare il tutto doveva esserci l’oscurità ed è così che nacque l’Iskari, figlio del sangue e della luna e portatore di morte.
Così, dal momento in cui nessuno si avvicina a toccarla per questo motivo, Asha protegge la sua gente diventando un ammazza draghi, forte e potente. Suo padre la propone in matrimonio combinato a Jarek, perfido comandante del padre ma comunque gli lascia una possibilità di libertà. Se entro la data del matrimonio lei ucciderà e porterà la testa di Kozu, il drago antico e leggendario che ha distrutto il suo popolo lei sarà libera dal vincolo impostogli.
Cosa succederà se lungo il suo cammino si intrometterà qualcuno che non doveva avvicinarsi a lei? Riuscirà Asha nella sua missione? Sarà finalmente libera? Quali misteri celano le storie proibite che Asha, ancora oggi racconta?
Asha too it and slid it onto her fourth finger. It wasn’t a beautiful ring. But its presence held a kind of power. The same power as her mother’s voice in the darkness. Or her mother’s hands, cupping Asha’s face as she told her not to be afraid. The ring was a reminder: people hadn’t always been scared to touch her. Or love her. The weight of her mother’s ring on her finger conforted Asha.
La trama è ben scritta e fin da quando ne era stata annunciata l’uscita ero assai curiosa di leggerlo. Poi è capitato all’interno della scatola della Fairyloot che ho acquistato e ne sono stata ancor più felice. La cosa che colpisce più di tutto sono le storie proibite che troverete all’interno del libro che creano una combinazione meravigliosa fra la storia principale e questi racconti.
La copertina di questo libro è stupenda e mi piace ancor di più la versione che posseggo, quella della Fairyloot perchè davvero particolare visto che il dorato che vedete è argentato e l’intera copertina è tutta argento come vedete qui di lato – diversa da quella che vedete invece in alto. La copertina forse non rappresenta troppo a pieno la storia ma la trovo davvero stupenda, una fra le più belle che ho in casa. Voi cosa ne pensate, vi piace questa copertina? Il titolo rappresenta benissimo questa storia, che voi tutti dovreste leggere e spero che vi piaccia. Una storia davvero incredibile e non poteva essere scelto titolo migliore per rappresentare questa storia. Ho visto parecchie versioni all’estero in cui hanno preferito sottolineare e mettere Iskari nel titolo, piuttosto che quello originale ma vi assicuro che anche questo titolo ha senso, forse più di “Iskari”.
L’ambientazione di questo libro è prettamente fantastica e partorita dalla mente dell’autrice che ci figura in un epoca piuttosto medioevale, in una città chiamata Firgaard, in cui esistono i draghi, antiche leggende e racconti proibiti.
She needed to find her shadow dragon. And then she needed to hunt down Kozu. She had only four more days. She’s done what she’d promised. She showed him the tunnel. It was his own fault if he caught there, sobbing like a child. But the higher she climbed, the more she thought. Even if the skral managed to make his way up into the Rift, there were wild creatures, the elements, and of course, Jarek’s hunters. What if they caught him? So Asha turned around and went back.
I personaggi sono stati ben descritti e fin da subito non si può far altro che figurarsi molto bene queste persone nella propria mente. La cosa bella è che Asha vi entrerà nel cuore molto lentamente ma sarà di sicuro la vostra preferita. E finirete per amare anche i draghi, creature maestose ed incredibilmente pericolose, anche se non per la nostra Iskari.
Asha è un personaggio piuttosto particolare. E’ chiusa, fredda ed un ottima ammazza draghi. Difficilmente ha paura e sembra quasi non provare emozioni tanto è distaccata dagli altri. E’ una ragazza che entra nel cuore pagina dopo pagina e finirà addirittura per farvi quasi tenerezza. E’ una ragazza forte, decisa ma il suo cuore è fragile e si sente insicura sotto molti aspetti. Quando incontra Torwin, lo schiavo che la aiuterà lungo il suo percorso e che la metterà ancor più in pericolo, la sua vita cambia. Torwin non ha paura di lei anzi ne è affascinato ed entrambi sono irrimediabilmente attratti l’uno dall’altra anche se lo scopriranno molto lentamente.
Safire e Dax sono rispettivamente la cugina e il fratello di Asha. Sono dei personaggi che all’interno della storia non spiccano per qualcosa di particolare ma sono importanti nella struttura e nel modo in cui si muovono all’interno della storia. Proprio come Kozu e Shadow che sono due draghi molto diversi fra loro ma importanti a loro modo in questa storia. Kozu è sicuramente quello più importante: ha bruciato il villaggio di Asha, le ha sfregiato il volto ed è per lui che lei si trova in questa situazione ma entrambi hanno il loro ruolo. Personalmente ho preferito Shadow ma entrambi sono stati due esseri affascinanti e ben strutturati all’interno di questa storia.
Torwin brushed aside a stand of Asha’s hair, tucking it behind her scarred ear. “I got hungry with Iskari for never looking around her. To the ones who loved her. To the ones who could save her.” “But no one can save her.” “How do you know? She never lets anyone try.”
Il perno centrale sono proprio le storie proibite e quella più famosa di tutte, quella dell’Iskari e del Namsara. E’ su questo che la storia si basa e si sviluppa; l’intero libro si basa su delle antiche storie che parlano di Iskari e Namsara, di draghi, distruzione, potere e morte. Tutto gioca un ruolo fondamentale e vi stupirà pagina dopo pagina.
Lo stile utilizzato non è particolarmente fluido, soprattutto agli inizi in cui ho avuto sia qualche difficoltà ad abituarmi allo stile dell’autrice e all’inglese leggermente più tosto degli altri che mi sono capitati fino ad ora, sia per il fatto che sembrava non carburare nelle prime cento pagine. Allo stesso tempo, una volta che ci si prende la mano, il libro si legge in davvero poco tempo.
Sicuramente la storia è originale e particolare. All’interno del libro, infatti troveremo delle pagine più scure, in cui vengono raccontate le antiche storie proibite che Asha racconta ai draghi e che a sua volta ha sentito da sua madre. In più, il fatto che Asha sia l’Iskari e racconti queste storie per attirare draghi per ucciderli è davvero sorprendente se si pensa che una sola ragazza possa riuscire ad uccidere una bestia così potente, distruttiva e maestosa. La cosa a colpire di più il lettore è il cambiamento vero e proprio di Asha. La protagonista durante il corso della storia matura più che mai e diventa sempre più un personaggio che nonostante sia chiuso, scontroso e alternativo rispetto al solito, è quello che amerete di più.
Il finale di questa storia è sorprendente. Tutto questo mistero e la storia che aleggia nel libro sembra essere decisamente unica nel suo genere e niente è come ci si aspetta. C’è stato un momento in cui mi sono addirittura commossa ed in questo genere di storie è davvero raro che mi succeda.
While Asha sobbed out her rage and grief, Safire’s arm came around her, pulling her in, cradling her while she cried. Kozu came out of the shadows then. He nudged the younger dragon with his snout. He noudged twice. When Shadow didn’t respond, a sound split the night in two, joing whit Asha’s sobs. A low, knening wail. A dragon song for the dead.
Il libro è particolare, originale e sicuramente un buon fantasy standalone. L’autrice ha scritto già un altro libro ambientato nello stesso mondo e con un punto di vista diverso ed una storia a parte rispetto a quella che troverete in questo libro. Sono comunque curiosa di leggerla, visto quanto mi ha catturato questo libro.
Kristen Ciccarelli è un autrice che con il suo primo libro entra nella classifica degli autori fantasy più apprezzati del momento. Una storia che parla di coraggio, amicizia, riscatto e d’amore. Un fantasy d’effetto che vi entrerà nel cuore.
Il mio voto per questo libro è di: 4 balene e mezzo.

The story begins with a forbidden story. Asha tells her in secret to attract and deceive a dragon and then kill him. As a child, Asha’s mother told her of the forbidden stories to make sure that the child no longer had nightmares, and just telling her he killed her.
When Asha, as a child, tried to reproduce those old forbidden stories, she attracted a dragon to the city that destroyed it by burning it. Asha from that event remained scarred on the face as well as deeply marked as everyone points out as Iskari, or the bearer of death. one of the ancient and profound stories says that once there was the Namsara, son of the sky and the spirit that carried with him a trail of love and fun wherever he went. but when there was light to counterbalance everything there must have been darkness and that is how Iskari was born, son of blood and the moon and bearer of death. so, from the moment when nobody comes close to touching her for this reason, Asha protects her people by becoming a dragon dragons, strong and powerful. Her father proposes her in marriage combined with Jarek, perfidious commander of his father but still leaves him with a possibility of freedom. if by the date of marriage she will kill and carry the head of Kozu, the ancient and legendary dragon that has destroyed her people, she will be free from the bond imposed on them.
What will happen if someone who does not have to get close to her enters along the way? Will Asha succeed in his mission? Will it finally be free? What mysteries conceal the forbidden stories that Asha, still today tells?
The plot is well written and since I was announced the release I was very curious to read it. Then it happened inside the Fairyloot box I bought and I was even happier. the most striking thing is the forbidden stories that you will find within the book that create a wonderful combination between the main story and these stories.
The cover of this book is beautiful and I like even more the version I own, that of the Fairyloot because really special because the golden you see is silver and the whole cover is all silver as you see here on the side – different from the one see instead at the top. the cover maybe does not represent the story too much but I find it really beautiful, one of the most beautiful I have at home. What do you think, do you like this cover? The title represents this story very well, that you should all read and I hope you enjoy it. a truly incredible story and could not be chosen best title to represent this story. I have seen several versions abroad in which they preferred to emphasize and put Iskari in the title, rather than the original one but I assure you that this title also makes sense, perhaps more than “Iskari”.
The setting of this book is purely fantastic and born from the mind of the author who appears in a rather medieval era, in a city called Firgaard, where there are dragons, ancient legends and forbidden tales.
The characters have been well described and immediately you can not help but imagine these people very well in your mind. The nice thing is that Asha will enter your heart very slowly but it will certainly be your favorite. and you will end up loving even the dragons, majestic and incredibly dangerous creatures, even if not for our Iskari.
Asha is a rather peculiar character. It is closed, cold and a good dragon dragons. he is hardly afraid and almost does not feel emotion, so much is detached from others. It ‘a girl who enters the heart page after page and will even end up making you almost tender. She is a strong girl, determined but her heart is fragile and she feels insecure in many ways. when he meets Torwin, the slave who will help her along her path and that will put her even more in danger, her life changes. Torwin is not afraid of her, but rather fascinated and both are hopelessly attracted to each other even if they discover it very slowly.
Safire and Dax are respectively Asha’s cousin and brother. They are characters that in the history do not stand out for something special but are important in the structure and the way they move within the story. Just like Kozu and Shadow who are two very different dragons but important in their own way in this story. Kozu is definitely the most important: he burned the village of Asha, scarred her face and it is for him that she is in this situation but both have their role. personally I preferred Shadow but both were two fascinating and well structured beings within this story .
The central pivot is precisely the forbidden stories and the most famous of all, that of Iskari and Namsara. It is on this that history is based and developed; the whole book is based on ancient stories about Iskari and Namsara, dragons, destruction, power and death. everything plays a fundamental role and will amaze you page by page.
The style used is not particularly fluid, especially at the beginning when I had some difficulty getting used to the style of the author and English slightly harder than others that have happened to me until now, both for the fact that it seemed not to carburize in the first hundred pages. At the same time, once you take your hand, the book is read in a very short time.
Surely the story is original and particular. Inside the book, in fact we will find darker pages, in which the ancient forbidden stories told by Asha to the dragons are told and in turn he has heard from his mother. Moreover, the fact that Asha is the Iskari and telling these stories to attract dragons to kill them is really surprising if one thinks that only one girl can succeed in killing such a powerful, destructive and majestic beast. The thing that strikes the reader the most is the real change of Asha. The protagonist during the course of history matures more than ever and becomes more and more a character that despite being closed, grumpy and alternative than usual, is what you will love more .
The ending of this story is surprising. all this mystery and the story that hovers in the book seems to be very unique in its kind and nothing is as expected. There was a moment when I was even moved and in this kind of stories it’s really rare that it happens to me.
The book is particular, original and certainly a good standalone fantasy. The author has already written another book set in the same world and with a different point of view and a separate story compared to what you will find in this book. I’m still curious to read it, given how much I captured this book.
Kristen Ciccarelli is an author who, with her first book, enters the list of the most popular fantasy authors of the moment. A story that speaks of courage, friendship, redemption and love. an impressive fantasy that will enter your heart.
