Oggi ho una nuova recensione per voi. L’editore estero, la Diamond Book Distributor dopo una Subscription al loro sito mi ha inviato gratuitamente l’ebook di questa Grapich Novel. Ed io ve l’ho recensito! Cosa ne pensate? (NB: Ovviamente questa Graphic è in lingua inglese!)
Titolo: The Castoffs, V.1: Mage Against the Machine
RECENSIONE:
Primo di una serie di volumi, The Castoffs è una Graphic Novel che colpisce con impatto immediato.
La storia ha inizio nel mezzo di una battaglia. I Maghi stanno cercando di salvare quante più persone possibili dall’attacco sconsiderato delle Macchine ma è sempre più difficile e si trovano in difficoltà. Leda riesce a svegliarsi e finalmente i suoi amici hanno un aiuto in più e riescono a sconfiggere le macchine nonostante le perdite.
La storia riprende vent’anni dopo. I Maghi più giovani vengono addestrati dai più grandi e Leda è diventata una persona di rilievo all’interno del campo. Viene a sapere di una voce che giunge da una gilda vicina e manda i suoi migliori studenti in ricognizione: Charris con il potere del vento, Trinh con il dono dell’invisibilità e Ursa sembra essere inutile se non con le sue pozioni, ma nasconde un potere considerevole.
Cosa starà succedendo alla gilda vicina? Riusciranno i tre Maghi ad essere all’altezza del compito che le è stato lasciato?
La trama è semplice ma forse un po’ troppo breve. Sarebbe potuto essere un pò più esplicativo ma comprendo anche che il libro avendo solo 137 pagine non si voglia raccontare troppo.
La copertina, invece, è molto carina e rappresentativa della storia in se per se. Al centro troviamo proprio i tre ragazzi Maghi a cui viene affidato il compito e la Macchina, rappresentativa della categoria. Il titolo che significa i Reietti, non mi è chiaro se si riferisca ai Maghi o alle Macchine. Avremo modo di rivedere la faccenda andando avanti.
L’ambientazione è fantastica e l‘epoca ha un non so che di post-apocalittico ma non saprei dire perché non è specificata.
I personaggi sono relativamente pochi ma interessanti e potenzialmente diversi fra loro.
Charris viene scelta da Leda perchè una delle più potenti nel suo gruppo. Peccato che proprio per questo che si crede forte e brava solo lei. Si sente un Leader e talvolta risulta antipatica.
Trinh è quella che personalmente mi è piaciuta di più. Il suo potere è utilissimo. E’ invisibile come un fantasma e può passare attraverso i muri, diventando quasi di vapore. E’ semplice, umile e si tiene da parte ma alla fine, almeno per me, è risultata la migliore di tutte.
Ursa è particolare ma giusta, almeno al momento. Sembra inizialmente inutile ed, anche se inganna Charris sui suoi poteri, lo fa a fin di bene. E’ molto utile alla squadra e riesce a mettere Charris in riga quando serve (praticamente sempre!).
Il perno centrale è la guerra che imperversa, fra Maghi e Macchine. I tre ragazzi vagano per andare a vedere cosa succede ad una gilda vicina e scoprono che c’è qualcuno che vuole riportare in vita le Macchine.
La grafica è stata molto accattivante. I disegnatori e gli illustratori hanno uno stile molto particolare e sicuramente riconoscibile. Ho preferito molto di più la prima parte, quella dei Maghi in guerra contro le Macchine e tutti i poteri che ne uscivano fuori. E’ stato pazzesco. Molto bello nei disegni.
La storia narrata è stata carina peccato nella mancanza di originalità almeno in questo volume. Spero che con i seguenti si riprenda. Vi spiego i motivi:
- I combattimenti finali sono deprimenti. Azione pari a zero e mi ha deluso la cosa perchè avrebbe potuto essere con più azione e invece no. Zero. Si sono limitati a poche mosse e tutto era risolto e mi è sembrato un pochino ridicolo.
- La persona che voleva riportare in vita le macchine si è capito da subito chi era e che potere potesse avere. Scontato come pochi.
Il libro, tutto sommato è stato carino. Mi ha deluso un pò nel finale perchè mi aspettavo molto di più. Spero che vada migliorando andando avanti con i volumi e che ci siano battaglie davvero epiche perchè la storia sembra interessante e di sminuirla non me la sento.
Consiglio? Si, per chi vuole cominciare a leggere in inglese queste letture sono davvero semplici, veloci ed intuitive. Provare per credere.

First of a series of volumes, The Castoffs is a Graphic Novel that hits with immediate impact.
History begins in the middle of a battle. The Wizards are trying to save as many people as possible from the ruthless attack of the Machines but it is getting harder and harder to find. Leda wakes up and finally her friends have more help and succeed in defeating the machines despite the losses. the story resumes twenty years later. Younger Wizards are trained by the Greater and Leda has become a major person within the camp. comes to know of a voice coming from a nearby guild and sends out his best students in reconnaissance: Charris with the power of the wind, Trinh with the gift of invisibility and Ursa seems to be useless except with his potions but hides a considerable power.
What’s going to happen to the nearby guild? Will the Three Wizards succeed in meeting the task they have been left behind?
The plot is simple but maybe a bit too short. it could have been a bit more explanatory but I also understand that the book having only 137 pages does not want to tell too much. The cover, on the other hand, is very pretty and representative of the story in itself. In the middle are the three Wizards who are entrusted with the task and the Machine, representative of the category. The title that the “Reietti” means is not clear to me if it refers to Wizards or Machines. We will have the opportunity to review the matter by going forward. ù
The setting is fantastic and the era has a do not know it post-apocalyptic but I can not tell why it is not specified.
The characters are relatively few but interesting and potentially different from each other.
Charris is chosen by Leda because one of the most powerful in his group. It’s a shame that just because you think that you are strong and just good. You feel a Leader and sometimes it’s disgusting.
Trinh is the person I personally liked most. Its power is very useful. It is invisible like a ghost and can pass through the walls, becoming almost vapor. It’s simple, humble and keeps aside but in the end, at least for me, it was the best of all.
Ursa is particular but right, at least at the moment. It seems initially unnecessary, and even though it deceives Charris over its powers, it does so well. It is very useful to the team and manages to put Charris in line when it is needed (practically always!).
The central pivot is the war that rages, between Wizards and Machines. The three guys wander to see what happens to a nearby guild and find out there’s someone who wants to bring the Machines back to life.
The graphics were very eye-catching. Designers and illustrators have a very distinctive and definitely recognizable style. I preferred a lot more the first part, that of the Wizards in War against the Machines and all the powers that came out. It was crazy. Very nice in the designs.
The narrated story was a sinful thing in the lack of originality at least in this volume. I hope that with the following we will resume. I explain why:
- Final battles are depressing. Action equal to zero and disappointed me because it could have been more action and not. Zero. They were limited to a few moves and everything was fixed and it seemed a bit ridiculous.
- The person who wanted to bring the machines back to life was immediately aware of who he was and what he might have. Discounted as few.
The book, all in all, was cute. I was disappointed in the final because I was expecting a lot more. I hope that it’s going to go better with the volumes and that there are really epic battles because the story seems interesting and to undo it I do not feel it. Council? Yes, for those who want to start reading in English these readings are really simple, fast and intuitive. seeing is believing.
My vote for this book is: 3 stars.
